Using Affinity Photo or Designer.

I have image of a greeting card with white border.

I want to put a shadow 2 sides of the border.

Inner shadow works no problem - Except it is in reverse. see attached

When I try using outer shadow I get no effect at all.

Any help suggestions appreciated

Welcome to the forums @covehithe

To see the Outer Shadow effect you need to set the Offset and/or Radius to something other than zero, otherwise the shadow is completely behind the layer.

If this doesn’t work for you, please give us a full-screen screenshot where the relevant layer is selected in your document and the Effects dialog can be seen with the Outer Shadow effect selected.

As @GarryP says, it's hard to know for sure without seeing the full picture. But my guess is that your image and its white background are both on a single layer, and that you need to separate them out onto their own individual layers. Otherwise you're applying your Outer Shadow to the outside edge of the white background, and it won't be visible.

A bit like this:

You probably need to resize the canvas to see the drop/outer shadow.

This canvas was resized by 20% but can just as easily be resized by pixels, this gives you space to apply and see the effect on the outer edge  you can either crop the image or resize it to suit your needs.

Many thanks for your help

It worked when I had white background on separate layer. I have now saved the white shadow box as a file and can Place the images very quickly instead of doing them individually - its very quick!!
