Alexi
While editing files in Designer v. 1.10.4.1198 the system suddenly shuts down. I am using a PC with the AMD Ryzen 4900H hardware and Windows 11 Pto. The application is more unstable when working with embedded bitmaps. It is more stable working with files on my Dell XPS 15 laptop. I am using the most recent AMD drivers for my system. I tried disabling OpenCL acceleration for AMD Radeon Graphics. Any workarounds or fixes would be appreciated.

Alexi
Here's the dump file from 16 November 2021. b910b5e4-fbe8-4b99-ad75-4c93258f1edf.dmp It is unlikely, there will be a dmp file for the Designer crashes since the system suddenly shuts off and requires a cold start. Alexi
Looks like libraster.dll is an Affinity dynamic library. Is that right? Affinity Designer is the only application I have used that is crashing in this particular manner on this hardware.

Yes! - Do you have other Affinity apps which do run Ok on your system? Alexi
Yes, Affinity Photo and Publish are both installed on this system. I have had one or two freezes while using Photo, but it is far more stable than Designer overall. I have not used Publish on this system. v_kyr
Hmm, could be still somehow GPU related, does Affinity Photo on your system run with enabled hardware acceleration (aka enabled OpenCL) and your GPU driver Ok? Alexi
@v_kyr I think it is GPU related but where exactly is the cause? I have installed the latest AMD Radeon drivers, and I have filed two bug reports with AMD in their bug reporting tool. The fact that the Affinity crashes do not occur on my Dell XPS with Intel i5 CPU and with integrated Intel UHD graphics points to the AMD graphics system as a cause. On the other hand, I have disabled OpenCL in Affinity Designer but the issue still almost immediately occurs. This implies the AMD Radeon graphics might not be only issue here. This is especially the case given that Affinity Designer (and not, say, Affinity Photo) is the only application exhibiting this extreme level of instability on the AMD graphics hardware. I think progress is needed from both AMD and Affinity to get this configuration stable.

I think progress is needed from both AMD and Affinity to get this configuration stable. I don't know if Designer and Photo when started up on Windows always do access and check the system GPU driver & OpenCL handling in the absolute same manner here. - But maybe the disable OpenCL setting hasn't been changed/setup correctly for Designer in it's "PerformancePreferences.xml" settings file in contrast to Photo. - You can manually prove if that file exists at all for your Designer installment and if it's file contents (the last line in that %AppData%\Affinity\Photo\1.0\Settings\PerformancePreferences.xml XML-file) reads True or False ... Affinity OpenCL Disabler If all looks Ok in the Designer "PerformancePreferences.xml" settings file, then something else might cause the problems here under Windows 11. In Designer "Preferences", I disabled OpenCL, then restarted the application. I confirmed that OpenCL was unchecked. However, when I went to the "PerformancePreferences.xml" file for Designer the setting for OpenCL acceleration was set to "False". I opened an .afdesign file with embedded bitmaps. I zoomed in and out of the drawing. Within seconds the application caused Windows to suddenly shutdown. There is something about this particular hardware that is causing problems with Designer when manipulating images. As mentioned, no other application I have used on this system so far generates sudden shutdowns of the entire system.

Yes, seems so, you can file in a bug report in the Designer bugs found on Win section of the forum together with your crash reports.
