I'm mainly trying to mask a section of the drop shadow I've added using the FX panel as part of it doesn't look realistic.  Is there any way to do this?  I believe in Photoshop it's possible but am not certain.

I'm sure this could also come in handy for many other FX besided drop shadow.

It is not possible directly.

As a workaround, you can duplicate a layer (prior to FX), apply the FX to the duplicate, and then apply a mask to the duplicated layer.

Some FX have a "direction" option. This can be utilized to hide part of the effect depending on direction.

Thanks for the suggestion and for confirming my suspicions that this is not currently possible.

Like @NotMyFault said "It is not possible directly."

See if this works for you:
1) Duplicate Layer, open FX and set the Fill Opacity to 0%
After this you should see the layer effect on its own layer.

2) On the bottom layer, open FX and uncheck all the effects.

Hopefully they will still add the ability to mask an FX on its own at some point.

Yes. That would be nice.
