MikeMyers Posted November 12, 2021 Posted November 12, 2021 I found out that Affinity Photo supports my Leica M8.2 camera, and also one of my latest hobbies, infrared photography, which means channel swapping. So many people are telling me there are "filters" available in another editor that make the infrared (simulated) photos better than those I might create the hard way, with a camera and an IR filter. I've been trying to learn how to use Affinity Photo again, and I keep getting stuck. I'm using my Leica M8.2 camera, with DNG images right from the camera, and TIFF images from using Apple Preview to save the DNG as a TIFF. My Mac OS is macOS Monterey, version 12.0.1, with an Intel processor, a fast CPU and lots of memory. The TIFF image opens normally, and the full set of commands shows up above the image. However, when I open the DNG image from my Leica, those commands are missing. The first thing I need to do is the channel swapping, which according to a video I watched, means adding a layer - but I can't get any of that to open when I have selected my Leica DNG file. Since the Leica M8.2 is listed as a supported camera, should my editing the RAW image work? If not, can I convert it to an Adobe DNG image, if that's the recommended next step? Once I get past this, I need to do the Channel Swap. Before or after that, I need to remove the red cast in the image by correcting the White Balance. That's likely to be my next question - I found a tutorial on this, and hopefully that is all I need. Thanks in advance.... Video: Quote

If so, once you've finished developing the file by clicking Develop in the Context Toolbar, you'll be back in the Photo Persona with the tools you were expecting. MikeMyers Posted November 12, 2021 Author Posted November 12, 2021 Beautiful, and thank you - it worked just like you explained! Yes, there was a blue box at the top left that said "Develop". So, I'm back on track, and will continue following the steps in the video. I'm not using an infrared image, just a regular image I just took. I just want to learn how to do the processing steps. One thing at a time. (I decided I don't want to use "rental" software, and everybody seems to like Affinity Photo. I'm hoping I don't have to create fake "pseudo" images that look like infrared, but aren't. That's what some friends are advising me to try. So far, so good!!!) Quote
MikeMyers Posted November 13, 2021 Author Posted November 13, 2021 Lost again. I took some photos with my Leica M8.2, and used Adobe DNG Converter to create new "standard" DNG files, with large jpg thumbnails inside them. I opened one in Affinity, did what I think was a basic change to the raw image (adjust brightness) and then clicked on "Develop". The expected tools never showed up, but the top line in the Affinity window says "Pan", whatever that means. At the bottom of the screen it says "DRAG to pan view". I have no idea of where to drag something. I guess I need to read a lot more about Affinity. Apparently I need to get to FILE so I can create a new layer to start editing. That's what I did yesterday, and everything actually worked for me. Quote
Old Bruce Posted November 13, 2021 Posted November 13, 2021 Do you have a little hand where the mouse pointer should be? That is the Pan Tool, that is why Pan and Drag to pan view are showing. Do you have the tools showing? View > Show Tools and check that item. I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.
MikeMyers Posted November 13, 2021 Author Posted November 13, 2021 Yes, I see the hand, where my cursor ought to be. Yes, "show tools" is checked. The "hand" icon at the left was highlighted, and I clicked on the arrow under it, and things were back to what I expected. Thank you - everything is now back to normal. 🙂 Quote
