champigny Posted August 13, 2021 Posted August 13, 2021 I am trying to focus merge 3 Nikon raw images in Affinity Photo 1.10.0 for MacOS Big Sur 11.5.2. I choose File > New Focus Merge... I add the 3 raw files. I click OK.APh 1.10.0 does its thing and then displays one of the 3 source images in the main AF window (labelled "Untitled"), and only displays two items in the Source list: one of which is labelled "Focus merged image", and the other is one of the 3 source files. I expected the Focus merged image to be displayed in the main APh window, and I expected at least the 3 source files to be in the Sources list. Is this indeed the way APh Focus is supposed to work? _7505786.NEF _7505787.NEF _7505788.NEF Quote
NotMyFault Posted August 14, 2021 Posted August 14, 2021 Hi, Affinity recommends to convert RAW files into other formats (TIFF, JPEG) before stacking. Using RAW in stacking is possible, but sometimes lead to issues which can be easily avoided. But the problem is more in wrong expectations about focus stacking and it’s limitations: normally a focus stack uses many images, with small equal-distant focus steps between them. Using only 3 images with shallow depth of field by f1/8 and huge gaps of focus points may be exceeding the abilities of Photo. There are not enough sharp pixels in the raw images based on chosen aperture. Dan C Posted August 20, 2021 Posted August 20, 2021 Apologies for the delayed response here! As confirmed above, the images have been discarded as Affinity simply can't Focus Merge these images. However, I do believe that the app should be more forthcoming when images are discarded due to being 'unusable', so I've created an improvement request with our developers to show a 'toast' popup when creating such documents, that your sources images were discarded as they could not be merged. I hope this clears things up Quote
