davifree
Just installed Affinity Pro. Application opens as a standalone - it does not appear as available as an extension within Photos. All applications are at the latest version. Any suggestions?
Staff MEB Posted October 28, 2015 Staff Share Posted October 28, 2015 Hi davifree, Welcome to Affinity Forums :) Currently you must install Affinity Photo Costumer Beta to make the extension available in Apple’s Photos. This will be available in the next Mac App Store (MAS) update. Remember to keep the MAS version installed since it's needed to run the beta in case you decide to install it. dendru
MEB, I purchased Affinity Photo from the App Store and installed the beta version but it appears only to offer Affinity Retouching as an extension in Apple Photos and not the full application. Is this correct? I really like Affinity Photo but I need to be able to use it within Photos. If this won't be possible in an update in the near future I'll have to get a refund. dendru
Other answers to this question had lead me to believe that the full Affinity Photo application would become available as an extension to Apple Photos but I just found this response from Oct 10th - Hi IanStuartPhotographer, Welcome to Affinity Forums :) The Affinity Retouching extension is not meant to be a replacement for the main application. It contains just a subset of the main application's features. What you're looking for (a roundtrip between Affinity Photo / Apples Photos) is not currently possible since Apple Photos doesn't offer support for editing in external photo editors (like Aperture for example) That's a great shame, I'm afraid its a refund for me and back to exporting files and opening them in Photoshop. Staff MEB Posted October 29, 2015 Staff Share Posted October 29, 2015 Hi dendru, Welcome to Affinity Forums :) Yes, currently the Affinity Retouching extension only offers a subset of the features you find in Affinity Photo. I believe it's meant to be an extension, not a full app replacement. For that kind of workflow usually there's an "Edit in external editor" feature/function. Apple provided it in iPhoto and Aperture, but not yet in Apple Photos. I don't know if this will be available later trough an Apple Photo's update or if extensions are intended to be an entirely new way to provide access to full third-party application functionality inside Photos. Sorry for not being of much help here. I will investigate this further. Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software

Does Apple Photo let you open Photoshop as an extension? The full app? If not then they are equal, Affinity Photo and Photoshop in that sense. I thought Affinity Photo was going to be the answer to this problem but alas not currently. Having said that I am very impressed with my experience of the trial version and may still consider it as a Photoshop Elements replacement. The Inpainting Brush tool is amazing and live filter layers feature very useful.
Staff MEB Posted October 30, 2015 Staff Share Posted October 30, 2015 Hi dendru, iPhoto and Aperture didn't allow Photoshop to run as an extension. They allow it (or any other photo/image editor including Affinity Photo) to run as an external editor. You can't use Photoshop with Apple Photos either, neither as an extension nor as an external editor. We don't have control over which features are integrated in Apple Photos. If you would like be able to use an external editor with Apple Photos you will have to request it to Apple directly. Just saw what is offered in the Affinity Photo extension inside Apple Photos, its quite a toolbox. Most impressed. ESPECIALLY compared to the only other app that I have installed Pixelmator. AP by far offers so much more.

That's correct but it worked exactly as an extension in that it took you directly into your chosen external editor and after editing the file was saved back in the iPhoto library. Now you have to export it from Photos and work on a seperate copy then re-import it. I appreciate it's not in your power to influence Apple over this and the ability to use certain Affinity features in the retouching extension is certainly a step in the right direction. Cyclura
I just purchased Affinity Photo (1.3.5). I created a test test file saving it to the desktop - no format options only Affinity's. I then tried to export the file as PSD and JPG, saving to the Desktop. Neither export wrote the file to the desktop; spotlight was unable to find the files. What's going on?
