On my iPad, I can change the document size as well as the canvas size. On my iMac, I can change the document size, but I can't find how to change the canvas size. The help website refers to a document menu, but I only have document setup which opens a dialog for document resizing. Am I overlooking something?

EDIT: my question is about Affinity Designer, I forgot to mention that when I posting this question.

@kirkt

thank you, but I now realize that I didn't mention my question is about Affinity Designer. Sorry for that!

In Designer, if there are no artboards use File > Document Setup > Dimensions with Anchor to Page to resize the canvas without changing the size of its content.

If there are artboards, each artboard can be resized individually by selecting it either in the Layers panel or by clicking on its name in the workspace & then using either the Move Tool or the Transform panel to do the resizing. (Basically, it is the same as with any other object.)
