Possible to create custom pattern swatch?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I've bought Photo and Designer and am open to being able to do this in both, but Photo would be nice.

I couldn't find a clear answer searching, but I'm trying to create a custom swatch out of a halftone (dot pattern) image that I have so I can use a brush to paint it on rather than fill.

Is it possible to do that or no? If it is, where can I find a tutorial to learn it?

Thanks for any help.

As far as I'm aware you cannot make a pattern swatch, if you try it will create an averaged colour not a pattern.

You can make a brush that will paint a halftone base texture...

In this brush example the brush will paint an Escher pattern using a round brush.

To make this type of brush...

  1. Click on the brushes panel
  2. Select the burger menu and choose New Round Brush
  3. Go to the Texture tab and click on Set Texture and find the halftone image you want to use.
  4. Experiment with the settings to get a desired look.

If you want the effect of 'painting' a repeating image, one way is:

Place the image in your document at the size you want.

From the Layer menu, choose New Pattern Layer from Selection:

With the Pattern layer selected In the Layers panel, click the Mask Layer button:

With the Mask layer selected, from the Layer menu, choose Invert (I've deleted the original pixel layer here):

Switch to the Brush tool, set the colour to white, and paint on the Mask layer:

Adjust the brush size and opacity to taste.
