Isn't that approximately the same question you asked (and I think got an answer for) around 3+ years ago?

File > Open opens a Windows File Explorer view of whatever folder you want, with all the capabilities provided by File Explorer, including previewing of RAW files if you have an apprpriate codec installed in Windows.

No I'm not looking for windows explorer I was hoping there'd be an internal window that showed a folder structure. Using File>open simply utilises an explorer window that does not even open in your picture folder. So for every photo you have to navigate to that folder which in my case some are 6 deep.
Also if you've just done a shoot you want to see them side by side to choose the one to edit.
I can't do any of that with explorer.

You can do that with File Explorer if you have an appropriate codec installed, that knows how to show previews for your camera's RAW files. The Microsoft Store has a free one you can install, but there are also paid ones.

File Explorer also allows you to setup quick-access links to make it easier to navigate to particular folders, and those work in the File Explorer dialogs that Affinity opens.

But it sounds more like you're looking for what is called Digital Asset Management (DAM). If you search the forum for the term DAM you will find many discussions. Nothing like that exists in Affinity, though it may someday. In the meantime, you will find in the forums many suggestions for free or paid DAM applications that you can use alongside Affinity.

Have they stopped developing Affinity now?

Oh so does a 1.9 Beta have a file open window built in?

No, it doesn’t. I was merely answering the question that I quoted from your previous post.

OK, well are there any plans to make this a feature so opening files is simpler?

Not that I’m aware of, but I’m not a Serif employee and I’m not privy to their plans in this regard. If Walt’s suggestion of using Windows File Explorer isn’t simple enough for you, I’m afraid you’ll need to look into third-party DAMs.

I was hoping Affinity would emulate some of the features of Lightroom, such as the inbuilt dam but without the cumbersome database, instead opting for a simple folder window style, which would be the default open.
It's very clumsy to use so I will go away and continue with Lightroom and come back in another 3 years and see if Affinity designers have decided to do things the right way.
Thanks for the chat :)
