Brushes won’t work on new documents

Hi Jim Cooper, A little more information would be helpful. Perhaps a screen shot showing the brush context menu settings. 😀

..... in the meantime make sure you don’t have 'protect alpha' turned on in context menu.

Where might I find that on iPad version I’ve looked for it and can’t find

When I try to use brushes it comes up saying assistant has added a raster layer

That’s standard behaviour if you’re trying to use a raster brush and the current layer isn’t a raster layer. Once the Assistant has added a raster layer for you, you should be able to paint on it: check the layers in the Layers Studio if you’re not sure what’s going on.
