Using Affinity to process star trails

Recommended Posts

I have been trying to use Affinity to stack and process star trails and am not having any luck. No matter what file type (TIFF, RAW or JPG) I try to use when I create a new stack, Affinity either takes hours to create the stack, hangs or crashes. When I try with just a with just a few images (less than 10), the stack is created and when I try to work with the image Affinity is slow, clunky and eventually crashes. Looking on the web I found a number or videos and guides that explain how to create star trail images with Affinity, but none of them seem to work for me.  When I finally managed to create a stack with all my images as JPG and tried to use "Merge Visible" it takes hours to complete the process. I heard and read a lot of good things about Affinity and although the photo editing features may be awesome, my limited experience in trying to use them to do star trails is very disappointing.

Are you using File > New Stack or stacking your images manually?

I think the problem with Astro Images is that the contrast is low and does not offer nice edges for the alignment process. If you are aiming at star trails then you want the low-contrast background to be aligned, but the low-contrast stars not to be aligned. This might be the reason for the slow progress and for the crashing.
