EPS files not opening properly in Affinity Designer

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I downloaded this file https://www.freepik.com/free-vector/bacteria-infection-virus-flu-background_7080504.htm from freepik. The EPS file opening properly on illustrator but opening as a image file only in Affinity Designer. I attached the EPS file.

It's probably due to the way that EPS file has been created and has been stored at all. There are several things which can influence the behavior of EPS files for other third party software, as there are for example ...

When exporting to EPS-8, you will most certainly get bitmapping if you use these effects and techniques:

1. Transparency 2. Opacity Masks 3. Radial Gradient 4. Linear Gradient, sometimes, not always, depends on opacity masks used, or if output Transparency setting is not 100% Vectors on the Raster/Vector Balance (in the EPS Options window, see below) 5. Drop Shadow 6. Gaussian or Radial Blur

When exporting to EPS-10, most of the problems encountered in outputting to EPS-8 are eliminated, except bitmapping will still occur with Drop Shadow and Gaussian or Radial Blur. For those effects, you have to find alternate methods that will produce the same effect (such as Blend Mode to replace Drop Shadow).
...

(see for example: Bitmapping 101: Troubleshooting EPS Files in Illustrator)

For EPS files which do use a lot of such Adobe Illustrator specifics,  the Affinity apps can't parse and interpret the EPS contents in the same proprietary vector manner as Illustrator (the file creator) and so instead will only be able to showup the rasterized image (bitmap) portions of such EPS files.

You would need an app like Xara (the only one I know that can open this file correctly besides AI) to be able to open and convert it to PDF and then open it in Affinity apps.
