I made a pen path which I'd like to turn into a selection to cut out the face, or at least mask body so I can rasterize to remove body leaving face.

So far all I've done is make the path black. Can't select (marching ants) the path or the black area. I tried  mask with black then Command i to reverse black to white so I could cut out the face. Getting nowhere. Help please.

The layer you have selected is a Pixel layer, not a Curve.
To select the black area use menu “Select → Selection From Layer”.
Once you have the marching ants selection you can use “Select → Invert Pixel Selection” to select everything except what’s under the black area, then choose the Image Layer that you want to cut the face from and press the DELETE key. Then you can make the black pixel layer invisible, then use “Select → Deselect”, and then carry on with what you need to do.

Worked perfectly. My Q now is how do I make a selection using a pen path? Is there a path panel like in psd?

I started with a pen path and somehow ended up with the black pixel layer.

The solution given by haakoo above is much better, in most situations, than the method I gave as it’s non-destructive so you can adjust the clipping mask without modifying the original image.
If you want to stick with paths then the method is much the same but you don’t rasterise the path, which is what I think must have happened for you (maybe by accident).
See attached video. Note that the part of the original image which you want to see should be covered by Black.

Found a 1/2 hour youtube video, so now I think I've got it. Had no idea in ID the psd path panel is in the easy to access top menu.
But just to be safe watching your friendly guy video. Thanks for your support
