Nathan Shirley Posted February 19, 2020 Posted February 19, 2020 InDesign has a very handy feature where you can right-click on a linked/imported object and choose "edit original" (or something like that). It opens the linked file in whatever program you created it with so you can edit it there and when saved the changes take effect in InDesign as it sees a new version of the linked file. It seems like that would be easy to implement, basically pointing to a shortcut of the linked file. And having that option in the right-click menu would be very convenient. Quote
walt.farrell Posted February 19, 2020 Posted February 19, 2020 Just to be sure, is it the right-click, or using the original program that is important to you? Or both With Linked images, or linked documents of some type, you can already double-click on the object's layer and edit it in a new tab in Publisher. And if you have Photo or Designer you can switch to the appropriate Publisher Persona to do the editing, which will update the original. (In 1.8 there are also improvements to allow double-clicking on the object layer in the Layers panel). Nathan Shirley Posted February 19, 2020 Author Posted February 19, 2020 I see, I didn't realize editing a linked document in one of the personas would update the original, that's basically what I was after. Thanks. Quote

Thanks. You're welcome. Note that this requires 1.8, currently in beta, for linked documents. In 1.7 it applies only to linked images (.tifff, .jpg, .png). Nathan Shirley Posted February 19, 2020 Author Posted February 19, 2020 Oh, I see. I just made such changes in 1.7 (linked documents). I wonder if when 1.8 stable is released it will update my originals without breaking... Quote

We can hope In the meantime, you could make a copy of the documents, install the 1.8 beta alongside 1.7, and experiment. Nathan Shirley Posted April 2, 2020 Author Posted April 2, 2020 Looks like there was an issue with this once upgraded to 1.8. The changes I made in 1.7 are still there, but if I try to edit further in the Designer profile it reverts back to the original file without the changes. Wonder if there's a way around this... perhaps a way to export the images as new designer files... not the end of the world if the changes are baked in I suppose. Quote

I suggest you create a new topic in the Questions section of the forum and describe your problem there in more detail, Nathan. Perhaps someone will know of a solution.
