Hi All,

This is my first time here. I'm a portrait painter and I have a full figure image that I would like to crop to a head and shoulders

I would like to be able to make the head exactly 6.5 inches tall as that's the size that the head will be in the portrait painting.

I'm working with Affinity Photo for Mac and so not technically inclined !!

This is referred to as the site size method. One of the support staff at AP sent me instructions, but but I'm wondering if this is possible?

Is there a way to mark point on the top of the head and then do the same on the bottom of the chin and then measure from point

A to point B and then either reduce, or in this case enlarge to exactly 6.5", with the ability to print it out on a sheet of 8 x 10 photo paper?

Thank you in advance. And if this is not possible how would you accomplish this.

I don't think there's a way to resize a document so that only a portion of it measures a specific value. In other words, you can Resize the Document so that the entire thing is, let's say, 10 inches tall. But in order to have just a portion of the photo become a certain measurement requires a "workaround." Here's what I would do.

1) Start with the original photo (see below)

2) Crop the photo so that ONLY the head is included in the crop. This is the part of the photo that you want to measure exactly 6.5 inches. Hit "Apply."

3) Choose Resize Document... from the Document menu. Change the Units to Inches. Do NOT change the aspect ratio (i.e., don't click on the "Lock" icon). Change the height (the second field in the top row) to 6.5 inches. Change the Resampling method if you want – I usually use the Lanczos algorithms. Hit the OK button. Your photo (which at this point includes only the head) is now 6.5 inches tall.

4) Use the Crop tool to crop the photo a second time. However, with this second crop, you'll expand the photo to include head and shoulders. This is possible because Affinity Photo makes non-destructive crops, and the entire photo is actually still there (as long as you don't choose Rasterize or export to some other format).

5) The right-most photo on the bottom is the result of my efforts - the head should measure 6.5 inches.

Why not just make a rectangle 6 1/2 inches high and scale the image until the head fits in the 6 1/2 inch box. After that make a 8 x 10 inch rectangle  and use that to position the image then crop. Actually you can just go straight to cropping.

Just tried this and it works well.

Nicely done. But, you know, we’re both doing the same thing. You’re using a couple of rectangles and the Transform panel; I used the Crop tool and the Resize command. As they say, six of one or a half-dozen of another...

Amazing how the brain works 🤔 left path, right path,  Actually all that's needed is the 6/1/2inch rectangle or even just a vertical line and then use the crop tool set to 8 x 10in the second rectangle isn't necessary, I was over thinking it.

Have a great day yawl!
