A few good merges would do wonders for Serif's placement against Adobe. Adobe's merges are one of the main reason they are in the position they are in. They went overboard merging with companies that they were much in direct competition with but Serif could certainly merge with companies that serve as compliments, it is necessary really.

Having the two products works together is something that we really help both companies greatly. Adobe can always say that their own products have tighter integration to sway people onto their side.

It took Adobe even longer then six years to attain all the features of PageMaker, that is one reason PageMaker wasn't killed off the day ID 1.0 come out. That is why I was saying who knows how long it will take until after Publisher 1 comes out until the product is on the same level of the current industry standards. Certainly too long to wait.

I should also point out Adobe bought Aldus so that they could have an immediate solution (PageMaker) and a long term solution that would eventually replace it (ID.) Serif needs to think in both the short term and long term. It took Adobe about a decade to replace PageMaker with ID.

It is hard to know they will be a competitor when we have no product to compare it to. Native is essential since it lets you pick which layer you need to import; I have an Illustrator file logo file that has a color version, grayscale, one without gradients, a striped version for applications were even greyscale is too much information (printing the logo directly onto a coffee container.) I really don't want to have to keep going back to the illustrator file and exporting out each time I need a variation on the file. I just need to do a search for the logo and then select the specific layers needed; don't make this a ten step process, I don't have time for that. I should point out Adobe has had this feature for 10-15 years. I can't keep wanting however more years it will take Serif to come out with a product that is on par with ID/Quark. Serif themselves doesn't even know how long that will take.

What would really hold me over until AP is released would be if the people at Serif could work with Quark so that Affinity files could open up natively in xPress. Being able to import files into a page layout program without first needing to export would be really nice and, I would think, minimal work on your behalf.

I have a FH file that extensively uses the glow effect; I am wondering if AD can't open that? Another FH files without the effect appears to be able to open the file.

So glad that MacOS file tagging is working now! It was so annoying to have to save the file, then add the tags in Finder, then if I had to rename the file I would also have to retag the file as well.

Actually XPress has had some great sales recently. I took advantage of their "competitive upgrade" program that lets InDesign users (and users of a lot of other products) get XP at half price! They had another sale that let me get the next update (2018) at about $80 or so. Both very good deals. They are already several good options for page layout now so I don't seem the need to sit around waiting for Affinity Publisher. It seems like the company has put their focus on iPad which is a smart idea since it takes advantage of the fact that Adobe been as serious about iOS development as Serif now appears to be. That seems to be a long term decision that wasn't a good one on Adobe's behalf in my opinion.

I have the latest version of FreeHand 11.0.2 It would probably be a good idea to join one of those FreeHand user groups. I also wonder if I could use my AppleCare support to help guide me through running multiple versions of Mac OS. But that probably wouldn't work with a third party tool.

The PowerMac is a maxed out 2004 model that can't go beyond Leopard. I tried asking people on the Fusion forums and no one got back to me. I might just give Parallels a try though I don't completely trust Microsoft.

I still have a PowerMac that has FreeHand and Leopard on it but it is S-L-O-W. Was hoping to run it on a brand new iMac instead. I just bought a Snow Leopard disc but haven't made it work yet. I might have to make the disc into a disc image first and then install the disc image in Fusion? I could go into the old computer and convert everything to EPS but it would be so much nicer to do on a new machine. My old Mac Mini only had 16gb of ram so it would have been hard to run Snow Leopard at the same time I ran Sierra but with 64gb that wouldn't be a problem so it would be nice to put those advanced specs to use.

One thing I would really like from a Lightroom like product would be to have a tagging system that is the same as the OS tagging system. If I search for a tag in the Finder/Spotlight it should also pick the tags in the photo editing program and the other way around. I can sort of understand why this didn't work when LR came out because at the time the Mac didn't have tagging but if we are starting with an all new product then the product should do this.

I know there are a lot of FreeHand users on this forum since we have had discussions in the past and I was wondering how successful people are getting it to work on a modern computer? When I try to import FH work into Affinity I can't 100% of it to come across so somehow I need to get Snow Leopard to work. I was wondering if anyone was using using FH via virtualization? I tried to get SL to run via VMware's Fusion but it seems like wants to have SL Server(?) which doesn't make any sense to me. Anyways it someone has this set up I would really like to know how it is done. I've got a lot of FH work stored that I would love to access again and I have 64gb of ram so I can easily run two operating systems side by side.

It didn't seem like Quark would have as many extensions as InDesign given the fact that it has lost marketshare. Hopefully the new competitive upgrade will increase some marketshare and make more extensions available.

I haven't checked out Quark's extension selection yet. I hope it is competitive with InDesign.

Mike, the LR like products are still very new (about 10 years old) where the layout tools are closer to 30. There is still a lot of ground to cover in this area. It is interesting to me how Apple scrapped both of their photo catalog tools in favor of a new one (Aperture and iPhoto which got replaced by Photos.) This shows in part that the pace of development in this area is moving quite quickly with a lot of innovation still in the pipeline. I haven't used Ventura so I can't comment on that.
Jens, as far as all the internet development tools I am wondering what the demand is for doing that in tool like ID and Quark over using apps that are specifically made for web design? Perhaps Affinity's persona feature would make this workflow significantly better? (A persona for web development, print, and ebook?)

I am curious to what areas you would think Affinity would do much better then Quark and/or ID? Having a single file format would be nice and could provide an new interesting way to work but beyond that it is hard for me to think of features that Serif would come out with that the other two couldn't just immediately copy with a vastly larger feature set.

Over the last couple of days I have been trying out the latest version of Quark that I have been really enjoying using (2017 is the only version I have used.) To me it seems like this is going to be a very hard area for Serif to compete in given that there are two products that many are happy with that have been advancing since the 1980s (or at least there are people that are happy with one of those two options.) Even if Publisher was out today it would still have a massive challenge in competing with these two options especially at Quark's new low $400 entry price (and yes that is low for a product of that level.)
To me it seems like Lightroom like products would be so much easier to compete with due to the fact that it is a field that is only about ten years old and still has a lot of room to grow. I still have several major grips with LR and also the way that Affinity Photo interacts with catalog software like Apple Photos. It just seems like the more logical step to me. I think the fact that LR is the one app that hasn't not yet been subscription only shows that Adobe is aware that customers could easily move off this product to a competitor more easily then many other more well established products.

Patrick, You are entering the layout field far too late. Practically everything I can think of wanting in a layout program is more a matter of tweaking the current features rather the rebuilding the whole program from the ground up. Very few people are going to wait 10 years for Serif to build an app that is on par with the current pro layout apps. It would make much more sense to do a Lightroom competitor that is still a pretty new type of software and actually has room for innovation. Adobe just came out with a new less feature rich Lightroom so trying to compete with that would be a lot more manageable. It would also make a Affinity Photo a more serious contender. A lot of what I want to see from Serif layout wise is to make Designer and Photo better at doing simple layouts like I was talking about in that post from about a year ago. Those programs still don't do some of the most basic layout functions.
