  1. I see what you mean but that is not what I saw. I'll try and reconstruct my search. I was looking to see it you could selectively lock guides.

Help >Index>Couldn't see where to find info on guides.

Help>Guides> comes up referring to View menu. Nothing about how to selectively lock guides. Back to Help.

Help>Search for guides>Measuring (I just wanted to know what it said) that is when I saw there was no Icon for the measuring tool and posted my comment.

I still want to know if guides can be selectively locked and if not why not as it could be a valuable feature.

Glad you like the quote about rules because it so true! I'll give you an example. I walk to a f light that controls crossing the road and lets say it is at red but there are no cars coming so I cross over but the other people who were also waiting to cross are still waiting for it to turn green!

I don't have a tablet yet I'm just thinking about it.

PS Its no good saying you "don't buy it" without saying why you don't buy it!

    Hi @jackamus,

    As Walt has mentioned:

This will resize the text within the text frame objects as you adjust the group size, allowing you to resize the Group to fit within an A4 document. If you hold the Shift key whilst resizing, the objects will retain their aspect ratio -

Make sure that you are using the detached handle in the bottom right of the frame in order for the text to be scaled with the transform :)

Gotcha! I used the bottom right corner handle and not the other handle near it. Thanks problem solved.

First, not voting is a vote for the most evil candidate. Leaving aside what our Supreme Court did here in the US to stop the recount, we had a presidential election determined by less than 400 votes in Florida.

Second, having just started using a drawing tablet (the kind without a screen) and thus far being thoroughly disappointed, I'd recommend making sure you can return it if you have a similar reaction.

That's just the tablet - the Affinity software is fantastic.

I don't want to be overly negative - we're not all the same person, many people seem to like tablets, and I'm used to using a mouse rather than a brush - but my sense is that if you're expecting to pick up where your brushes left off, you may be surprised at how awkward it feels at first.

My comment isn't about one tablet, it's about the whole category of input device. And to be fair, oil paints also feel awkward at first. But I do suggest that you lower your expectations.

It occurs to me that you might be more comfortable with a graphics tablet - one with a screen.

I disagree regarding voting. Here in the UK voting made absolutely no difference? We are in the mess today regardless of which party ever had power. By not voting at least you can say I had nothing to do with electing the idiots that are currently wielding the power. Like I said If voting did make a difference then it wouldn't be allowed.

Yes I should have said that I was looking at graphics tablets with screens. That would be more natural for me especially if it will lay flat. I realize that there will be a learning curve but I hope that I will be able to cope with it. I'm considering the Wacom Cintiqe Pro 24.

  7. Hi Mark,

Thanks for the info. I think what I'll do is choose the tablet first then trial the ArtRage app and see how I get on with it. This will be a totally new experience for me as I will no longer be using actual acrylic paint, pots of water, paint brushes, canvas and an easel.

One of the problems I found with acylic paint (Windsor and Newton) is that some of the colours were opaque which was good but other colours were either semi-transparent or transparent and this was a real problem.  I assume that in ArtRage you have control of the colour's opacity e.g. water coulors are transparent.

Well, as Jacamus said: "I've just had a look at their website and I'm quite impressed especially with the price - seems too cheap! However I can't find any detail about its size or detailed spec." it sounded like he might think it was a tablet with painting features built in!

(And yes, of course it's much better to use it with a tablet, I was just trying to make the point that it is an app, installed like any other, it is not dependant on having a tablet in order to install it.)

Having read much of what you guys have had to say about tablets and their apps my final question is:

If I get a tablet and use say Artrage would I be able to upload an image of an unfinished acrylic painting that I started and finish painting it on the tablet?

Once you Grouped everything, how did you do the transform operation? And what do you mean by "a mess"?

One method that should work is to select the Group then use the rescale handle (outer detached handle) on the bounding box. Though, in that case, I don't think the text font sizes shown will be accurate any more.

I used the one of the corner handles to drag to a different size but the grouped transforms in different ways. I have attached the file which is current ly on an A2 format - I would prefer an A4 format.

PS Feel free  to comment on the content as it is not private or sensitive information.

  10. I have created a one page doc made up of QS's and text boxes ( its a flow chart) that is just a bit too large for an A4 sheet of paper. I want to save the file in n A4 format. I thought I could group all the text boxes and QS's and simply transform them down but this doesn't happen and is a mess!

How can I do this without having to increase the doc size to accommodate all the information and be still able to edit?

Here is a quick effort. This was about 30 minutes of work but I had to get more familiar with the Pen and Node tools and their options. Background is arbitrary to contrast against the image of the filter thingy. This was done in V1. I quite like the Pen and Node tools now. Very nice!

    henry_version.png

Thanks Henry. I find it interesting that you had to get used to the Pen and Node tools. I would have thought that already knew how to use them.

Thank you for your effort but it doesn't help me know how to do it. I can select around the object with no problem but I can't work out how to remove the background. I would have thought 'Reverse selection' then Delete. But the Delete doesn't delete.

    Hi Jackamus,

Do you have any issues with font lists loading in other software (such as Apple Pages)?

    Lee

No and the problem has gone away! However what are those fonts that he a prefix 'Noto Sans"

    I know.
You gave an example of a workflow you used in Photoshop and I said that you could use the same workflow in Photo – select, invert, delete - just the same.

Sorry I didn't know that's what you meant! As soon as I had selected the object and before the mask I looked for a way to invert the selection and delete the background, That's where I was coming unstuck and somehow the mask turned up!

  14. 2 minutes ago, GarryP said:

    As I said...

Feel free to use another method - like the one suggested by henryanthony - for different types of selection.

The problem I'm having with all your solutions is that I do not know where I was starting from when  I asked the question! You Guys know the app intimately but I don't. Previously I used Photoshop and AP is nothing like Photoshop!

I got as far as using the polygon tool and stepping my way round the object and then somehow got this mask layer. Now that I have that how do I simply delete the background?

  15. 1 hour ago, GarryP said:

Thanks for the extra information and screenshot.

In this case, with hard edges in the image, I might use the Selection Brush Tool to do all of the selection as can be seen in my first quick attached video.
Use the Matte, Foreground and Background settings of the Refine functionality, as shown, to give you a better selection.

Or, I might use the Magnetic setting of the Freehand Selection Brush Tool, as in my second quick attached video – just click to start the selection and then drag the mouse pointer around (or inside) the thing you want to select (you don’t need to be accurate) without the button being held down, double-click to finish selecting.

Or maybe a mixture of both.

There will be other ways, these are just two options.

Thanks for the videos which I will try to grasp. Once you have selected the area you want to keep how do you delete the background?

Previously I used Photoshop which was very easy. You select the area using which ever tool is appropriate, Invert selection and then delete.

I guess the answer would depend on what you mean by “adjust/fine tune”.

You can use the different Modes (via the Context Toolbar) to add/subtract/intersect new selected areas.
You can also use the Refine functionality, again via the Context Toolbar.
You can use the Quick Mask functionality, select the Move Tool (or others) and manipulate the selection that way.
And there will probably be other methods.

It just depends on what you have selected and what you want to do with it.

If you can give us a full-screen screenshot which shows the whole application window, while you are using the tool, and showing what you have selected, and tell us how you want to “adjust/fine tune” it then we can probably give you other options and/or better advice.

like adjusting the selection using options in the Select Menu. (grow/shrink, feather, smooth etc).

Thanks for this. I did look at all those things but couldn't find what I was looking for. This is a screen shot of selection that I created using the polygon tool. All I want to do is remove the background, covered by the mask. Also before doing that I would like to adjust the mask own the right hand side of the selection to get closer to the object. How do I move the selection edge closer to the edge of the object?
