Well, this page (attached) says that it covers every tool.  Surely, with subsequent releases of Affinity Designer there might be new tools added, so it would definitely have an effect on the workbook.

And that's the kind of situation where they might update the book.

@walt.farrell  And if that's the case (since there certainly have been tools added since the book was published), and if they have updated the book at all, why not tell the users? So many love Affinity, me included. Shouldn't we, who love and support Affinity, be privy to the book updates info? Maybe many users would sell their old books and buy updated ones.

I do understand that broadcasting the update would reduce subsequent sales from those who equate the value of the book with the age of the updated version. There really doesn't seem to be any good solution that would protect the revenue of Serif while giving us what we want. As for the PDF/ebook versions request, I believe that the color integrity argument is valid.

The update issues will not stop me from buying the workbook if I decide to. I may buy it during Black Friday. I looked (because @Andreas Scherer bought one there) and the lowest used prices at Ebay are still not at or lower than the Black Friday sale. I'd rather have a new book. And I'm in the US so the price is lower. The best argument for the value of the aging book is what walt.farrell said. It can always be a general reference workbook, especially for a self-taught graphics designer like me. So, the workbook, along with the application help pages, these forums and YT vids provide all of the instruction that is needed. It's not all in one place, but that's ok.

I've bought the “Affinity Publisher Workbook” (First Edition in German) directly from Serif a few weeks ago (delivered through Amazon in no time). It's a really great book. I have finished the first tutorial from scratch and I wish I had more time to dig into the rest RSN. As a first edition (and a translation at that), the book does contain typos and omissions (IMHO), but it's cool to be able to submit bug reports to the Affinity Forums and get positive feedback.

I don't worry that the information in this workbook would loose its value in the years to come. In the general line of my profession, I have many “books of age”, e.g., my dead-tree copies of “The Art of Computer Programming” and “Computers & Typesetting” are more than twenty years old (although the author keeps fixing bugs and publishing corrections on his site and recently new editions of both series were released) and I pick them up regularly.

For current and up-to-date information of the three Affinity programs, I regularly consult the inline and online manual, which gets updated with each release.

Thanks for sharing your experience and opinion. It is a big help in making the decision whether or not to buy the AD workbook.

    Hi Walt,

So what you're saying is that I can confidently purchase the current workbook in the safe knowledge that it covers all tools for the current version of Affinity Designer (Version 1.8.4).

Excellent.  Then I'll go ahead and purchase it.

    Thanks.

Hi Steve: How has your experience with the Designer Workbook been? I'm on the fence about buying it, as I've been for years. With the upcoming Black Friday sale, I'm considering it again. What is the most recent updated date? Do you know?

  4. I came here today to get help because Publisher wouldn't create a new doc or open any after last use Saturday, 9/18/21. I reinstalled/repaired it to no effect. This is  on my desktop/ Win10. Strangely, it's still working fine on my laptop. For the past few days, I've been taking a course on my laptop and following along on my desktop.

Because of this problem today, I decided to compare the Task Managers of both devices by just opening the APub programs, closing the splash screens and not trying to open a new doc. Only difference I could see in Task Mgr was that the Memory% for AP on my desktop was twice that of on my laptop, over 700MB compared to over 300MB APub memory usage on the laptop.

Decided to restart my desktop and now I can open a new doc/old doc and all seems to be ok. I closed the app and restarted to be sure. It seems to be working just fine now. 🤔

The 50% offer lasts (at this time) only until May 20. If you downloaded the 90-day trial today it will run until July 20, but if you want the 50% discount you should not count on having more than 30 days to try the programs before you have to decide about purchasing.

Not the answer I hoped for. 😕 Grateful for the 30 days, however. Thanks again for clarifying.

    Hi Verto,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
The offer was already extended up to 20 May.

I downloaded the trials today, 4/20. Does that mean that for my 90-day trial period I have until July 20 to buy at the 50% discount? It can't mean that I have until 5/20 to buy at the discount, right? The 5/20 new deadline is the date that people have until to download the 90-day trials.

    Thanks for your clarification.

  7. Thank you for the updates. I'm a low-mid intermediate home user who is watching tuts to increase my proficiency. I would never have bought a subscription to PS but needed a more powerful program than the ones I was using. I've loved AP since I bought it years ago and have never used any of my other general photo editing programs since then. AP has all that I'll ever need. I appreciate Serif making their wonderful programs affordable to all and I promote them whenever I can.

Happy Spring and stay safe and sanitized! 😷

    Hello AlainP,

My apologies for the Workbook that you have received; it certainly isn't typical of the quality we usually provide.

I will be more than happy to help with this query. Please leave this with me for now, and I will be in touch with you on the email address associated with this forum account.

Thanks again for your time, and if there is anything else I can help with in the meantime, please let me know within this thread.

    Best Regards,

    Adam

Waiting on an update of this issue before I buy.

I got my book earlier this week.  Like the Designer book this is an excellent value.  Not just in physical quality, but in content too.

Here's why.  First, you learn the basics of the app and where things are. Next, you start on projects that teach you new things and often build on skills you learned in a previous one.  This progression causes you to build knowledge and confidence at the same time.   I've had more than a few "Aha!"  moments. Not just about the app, but about the techniques they are teaching.    I've also found inspiration and plan to try some new things. Brief project overviews are provided too. So you know what gear was used, what the photographer was thinking and planning etc. So it's more than turn page... click here ... do this... TADA!

Full disclosure before I hit submit. Affinity Photo had been collecting dust on my HDD for a while.  I bought it thinking, like Designer, it would be a great creative alternative to Adobe. But I quickly got frustrated with the UI. I was hopeful this book would change that and so far it has.

And... I'm only half-way through it. :D  Let the good times and learning continue.

Ok, so this workbook starts at a good place for beginners/intermediate users and is not only for advanced users? I hope so. I love Affinity Photo and hope to use it forever!:x It is all that I will need. Thanks for your info.

  10. Got it, but strange that I had to copy the Affinity Shop cart page address link from FFox over to Chrome to see the page at all, and complete my free content order. For some reason FFox kept showing me a blank, white page no matter how many times I reloaded the page. I had updated from Photo 1.5 and had no problem seeing the free content link in my splash screen though. I use Win 10. Always something with FFox!

  11. Very nice! I really enjoyed your projects. I liked many of them, but Reveal Lemonade had the most effect on me. My mouth watered, and I felt that I could see and feel a lemon being squeezed and wrung of it's juice. Not only did my mouth water, but I felt my tongue twisting ! You're very good at designing effective logos. Good luck to you!

  12. Been using Affinity Photo for some months now, but today have started with the beginner videos. They are great! So easy to hear, understand and follow. They will make an outstanding difference in my graphics work, mostly because I am self-taught. So glad I bought AP. I just L*O*V*E the program. If a subscription was required, I would not have been able to purchase it.

Thanks again for all of your help!

I promote AP at my social sites. :)

  13. That screenshot doesn't show your screen scale, it shows your refresh rate. Go to "Display Settings" on Windows 10.

Looking at the screenshot of the application, it appears you've definitely got a high scale on, as the UI is struggling to fit into the window.

Too bad that is the only window that doesn't fit at the 125% scale. I guess it has a lot more controls than the others. I opened a lot of them and they displayed low enough on the screen to see the header, but then the windows are shorter.

  14. Hi, at 100% display scale, the dialog is approx 650 pixels high, so it should happily fit on your monitor. Do you have display scale set to anything greater than 100%?

Yes, I do. Thought of that, but didn't change it. I see that Paulo already tried that, without success. I bought the application, and I see that it wasn't corrected. Not a deal-breaker, just annoying.

  15. Hi LilleG,

The Deform filter allows you to warp areas of your image from user defined anchor points. It can be useful for making subtle corrections or targeted distortions.

If you go to Help > Affinity Photo Help and then go to Filters and Effects > Distortion Filters > Deform you will see a before and after gif of an image with the deform filter applied this should give you an idea of what it does :) The help will also teach you how to use the Filter and define your own anchor points.

If you are still having issues after reading this please let me know :)

    Thanks! This was very helpful.

  16. Hello:

When I open the filter window for Lighting, it opens with it's header out of view in the top of my screen, and centered on top of my image. Since I can't mouse over the header of this window, I can't move it. Can't find any way to resize it, either manually or with Affinity/Windows keyboard shortcuts. In searching, did not find anything in these discussions.

After playing around, I found that pressing Ctrl + Alt + up/down/left/right arrow, if rotates my entire screen, and the window header becomes visible. I can then see and click/hold the header and move the window. Then I rotate the screen back, and all is fine.

Was hoping that when I closed the Lighting filter window, it would re-open to the closing position, but it did not. Have had to do the whole moving process each time. Is there a faster way? My screen resolution is 1024x768, I use a CRT monitor and Win10.

    Thanks! :)

  17. I have PagePlus X7, CraftArtist 2 Pro, and I think I got BenVista PhotoArtist 2, and PhotoZoom Classic 6 through Serif. For my image-editing work, I have been an Arcsoft PhotoStudio6 user for years. I do have an old ME/XP Serif DrawPlus program that I never studied to use very well. Now, I am excited about AffinityPhoto, and am already sold on it after 2 days of use.

I am a crafter, writer and artist, with a background in clerical work. I am currently taking online classes in Business Mgmt & Admin. I create decorative, functional and wearable handmades, published products, and provide creative services. I focus on the handmades market, but am happy to help anyone. I have a creative lifestyle website, The Creative Seller, where I share about arting, writing, crafting, home & garden, marketing and business. My online shop names are Paper Nirvana, Paper Euphoria, and EmbellishMart. Can you tell that I love papercrafting?   I also have some graphic designs on POD products at Zazzle and Society6.

I am thrilled to be a part of the AffinityPhoto beta testing. My hope is to begin taking the tuts so that I can become proficient in using the software, or at least greatly improve the skills I've acquired over the years. I know that I am running with the big dogs in participating in these forums. Since I am self-taught in everything, please forgive any tedious or tiresome questions.

I do like my Serif products very much, and look forward to making time to study them more. I also appreciate how Serif has made already affordable products more affordable for me, through occasional specials and discounts.

    Happy Creating!

    Sandi
