For me, it was about 14KB. For me, both Add & Divide work with the file & with this super simple loop.afdesign version made with the Pen Tool & with just 3 nodes.

R C-R when I try your super simple loop as is I find that clicking add leaves it as a "curve".  But if I use transform to rotate it 120 degrees.  Then click add I get a "curves", which then can be divided.  Give that a try.  If I use anything from 120 thru 160 I get "curves".  170 thru 290 again I get a "curve".  300 it's back to "curves".

I don't know which action is correct.

Either pen or pencil gives similar results.

That's even weirder.  I took a vertical fish curve drawn with a pen, the add didn't create a dividable curves.  Then took that same curve and using the Transform Mode rotated the original curve to horizontal (approximately) and it did create a dividable curves.  Found the same using the Move tool and doing a 90 degree turn changed it from non-dividable to dividable.  Did it again using 10 degree rotations and at one point the result changed.

If it was drawn using the Pencil tool you can switch to the Node tool and adjust the length of the lines or adjust them to where they meet to look better. Designer doesn't have a shapebuilder tool but you can use the default shapes along with boolean operations to create custom shapes and again use the Node tool to adjust them further.

Lee, what's up with this vertical vs horizontal difference?

The Add produces a single Curve (with a pinched "waist") for me, so Separate Curves is greyed out and Divide Curves has no effect.

    Interesting I used: test5.afdesign

And have the opposite effect.  I wonder why they act so differently.  Going to have to play with that a bit.  Mine was only 11kb.  Maybe that has something to do with the difference.

I have a bunch of shapes (as Groups, consisting of Curves), and an image which I want to drag across all the shapes and appear only within the hexes. Essentially, turn all the individual hex groups into a mask that reveals the image layer, while the rest of the board remains transparent.

How about if you select all the hexes then do either an add or a merge to make your mask?

It's 2020, I have had this problem since the last 2 updates. I select 2 lines with the shift key, move one node on top of the other, and nothing happens. Join curves is greyed out, so can"t select it.

What's happened is that your shape has been auto closed when you dropped the one ending node exactly on top of the other end node.  If you grab one of the nodes you will move both ends as they are no longer separate.  That's why the Join Curves is grayed out.  But for some reason your shot shows Break Curve grayed out which it shouldn't be.  Instead the Close Curve should be grayed out.  Check to see if this is really how it's shown.

On a closed curve when any node(s) is selected Break Curve should be usable.  But Join and Close should not.  But when an end node is selected on an open curve Break will be grayed and Join and Close will be usable.  I hope that helps.  As you can tell from my entries from 6 years ago I fought figuring out what was going on.  The auto close still bites me sometimes when I am just trying to have the 2 end nodes very close but not closed.  I have one application I draw frequently that has this case and I've found workarounds that aren't too difficult.

I was wondering if there is a hotkey to switch from one layer to the next.

The reason Dan had asked what application you are using was AD has this function while APh does not.  In AD cmd + opt + [ moves to the next layer, with the cmd + opt + ] moving to the previous.  Dan also asked if you are using a mac or windows, I'm on a mac so maybe windows is different (other than opt is replaced by an alt).

  7. My luck certainly has changed.  Yesterday was my first crash in almost 2 years, and now...  I went to lunch after doing some adding and moving of nodes in my current drawing.  Then when I came back I clicked file > export and AD was gone instantly.  Attached is the crash report.

    Crash 11-10-20.txt

Yup, every time I click file > export I see the the window for the file type, which was svg the last time used, then AD is gone.  9 times so far.

This drawing uses a remake of the layer that was causing the problem in this report:

But it was remade about the same way as the original problem layer.  But the remake didn't crash on the divide as the old had.

The problem with this file does not exit in 1.8.4, only in the beta 1.9.0.6.  I also tried exporting an svg from 1.8.4 then importing it into the beta and everything seems to work fine.

This is the layer of the file that keeps crashing:

    Hummer.afdesign

  8. 5 crashes in a row.  I copied the layer I had been using into a new file and it crashed.  Attached is a copy of that minimalistic .afdesign file.  In case you want to try it.  The original shape contained in this file was created by doing an Expand Stroke, a divide and a few Add's of pieces from the divide and some pen drawn shapes to connect them.  The funny cut into the expanded stroke was an erroneous result of the Expand Stroke.  But I only needed the inside portion of the expanded stroke so I wasn't worried.

I just did a Separate Curves of this shape in the attached file and everything seemed to work out correctly.

  9. Wow, first crash I've had in ages.  I had just done an Expand Stroke then clicked on divide and AD was instantly gone.  Attached is the crash report.  AD beta 1.9.0.6 on a mac running Sierra in separate mode.

FYI when I reopened the beta I wasn't offered to open the recovery file.  A blank canvas was what I got, then when I told it to open the last saved it then offered the recovery file.  I don't know if the offer was just slow or if it wasn't triggered until I tried to open the last saved.

When I redid the expand stroke and divide it crashed again.  I tried to upload my .afdesign file but after it did I got an error message saying -200, twice.

Could someone please explain how I save it as an Affinity specific palette/swatch file.

When in the Swatches panel with the palette you wish to export visible, left click on the icon in the upper right corner and select Export Palette.

Then a Save window should open with .afpalette as the default.

This resulted in a file Greys.afpalette being created on my desktop.

  11. This is really embarrassing!  Yesterday I was playing around and I created the shape below, very easily.  About as easy as making a cog using the shape tool.  And for the life of me I can't remember how I made it! 😱  The only thing I have saved is the attached which is a curve.  I believe I remember specifying the number of arms and the adjusting the size of the bulbs and valleys.  Today I can't find (or remember) how I did it.  I know I did not draw each bulb and valley separately.  Has anyone run into a way to easily make this?  What am I missing, not counting my memory.  I can remember thinking, wow this is really handy and a cool shape.  Help!
