  1. I’m using ‘open in’ as I described... via the iUSB Pro app, but directly from my SD card in the GeekGo reader. No Photos app transfer needed. Just transferred a RAW file into the iUSB app and disconnected the reader. I can STILL ‘open in’ for the iUSB app without the reader at all. Once file is moved into iUSB app, select ‘App’ where you see you RAW file. Then click top right where it says ‘more’. Then click ‘edit’ top right. Select your file, then click ‘Action’ bottom left. At this point you’ll have either Open in, Email, or Rename.
  2. I thought of that, but all of my USB memory sticks are male USB, as is the USB end of the GeekGo reader. I could buy a male to female convertor I suppose, but I don't really need one because I can read USB memory sticks, as well as solid state USB drives from the USB port on my RavPower portable wireless hub that I referenced earlier in the thread. Also, many of these devices... including the GeekGo ones, are promoted to be used with hunting/trail cameras. So, I bet any of them making this claim would be compatible with plugging right into the camera. I don't have any cameras with the standard size USB port for file transfer though, so I can't confirm.
  3. @DM1 To "Open in" you click "Edit" at the top. Then select the file you want. Then, select "Action" at bottom left. From there you can either Open in, Email, or Rename No, I don't move the RAW files to the camera roll. I don't even really have to use the Photos app at all actually. After I put the SD card in and read it in the iUSB Pro app, I see all of my JPG images first, then after that I see all the same files, but their RAW counterparts. I shoot RAW + Jpeg and I've tested this with Olympus and Panasonic. Haven't tried Nikon yet, but I'm certain it'll work the same.
  4. @DM1 GeekGo has one like that second option too. I went with the top one with the short cable, because the other one didn't say anything about it being able to function for charging too. I also bought the one with the short cable so that it'd be easier to connect to iPhone & iPad with cases on. I'm not surprised it uses the same app... it looks pretty generic. I bet the iUSB Pro app works with a lot of devices, but I don't have other ones to test myself.
  5. That eBay seller in the link I provided ships them to the United Kindom, Australia and several other countries. I haven’t personally used them though.
  6. Here's the iOS app GeekGo directs you to use with their reader. Its free and I don't know if it's actually their app, or just a generic app. It doesn't get very terrific reviews, but I have a feeling that has more to do with sloppy GUI stuff. For example, when I first started trying to simply transfer files to the Apple Photos app but hitting the dedicated button for that... it kept crashing on me. I had to discover on my own that the iUSB Pro app needs permission granted to access the Photos app. Instead of just telling you that, it crashes. However, if you just go to the device icon first, it will ask for permission to access the camera roll from there. Grant it permission, then the copy to camera roll works perfectly after that. I'm guessing many haven't figured that out on their own yet and have been giving it poor reviews. I've been using it for about a month now and it's been pretty solid. It's also possible that this app might work with other USB devices connected via Apple's USB connection kit, but I don't have one of those to try. Anyway, if anyone wants to experiment with other iOS/USB storage devices and this app... here's the link. Again, it's free: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/iusb-pro/id1069615726?platform=ipad&preserveScrollPosition=true#platform/ipad
  7. This is so strange about the GeekGo not shipping everywhere. There are several things that make this a stellar product. That fact that you can plug it in to an external battery and charge WHILE transferring files is cool. I bought an extra fast Samgung U3 miniSD to basically use as this reader's dedicated storage. What's great is the app it uses. It can add a step here and there, but it gives you so much more flexibility each way. THIS is the way iOS file management should be handled natively IMHO. I like going this route vs the drives that come with their own memory, because already have loads of SD cards, they aren't expensive, and I can take advantage of faster memory as it comes available. (The GeekGo referenced, also supports up to 256GB SD cards) Do check with the GeekGo manufacturer. Possibly there's an identical product just branded differently for various markets? It's great to use with Lumafusion too. I have a RavPower hub that's also an SD card reader, an external backup battery, is an SMB device, and has a USB port that I can plug an extra solid state drive or USB flash drive to. With the GeekGo, I can transfer files to/from either an SD or miniSD care, while ALSO charging my device with the USB end of the GeekGo via the RavPower hub, and ALSO be transferring files to/from the RavPower vis it's own wifi network. All at the same time. Do I really need to be able to do that? No, not really... but it's cool that I can. When I'm traveling, sometimes I'll be in the room and want to transfer files before heading out to get a bite. This combo makes all of that much faster, so I can be transferring my still and video from one device, while also transferring my audio recording files with the other device. Here's the RavPower I'm using along with this. And yes, I've already tested and it works as I've described. https://www.amazon.com/RAVPower-Wireless-Portable-Companion-Streamer/dp/B016ZWS9ZE/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1520355964&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=ravpower+charger+hub+wifi One more thing... are you folks in countries other than the U.S. trying to search for the GeekGo via your own Amazon browser? I'm asking because maybe because you're going through my U.S. link, it's giving you that message? EDIT: Looks like you can buy the same GeekGo product directly from the GeekGo website. There are also some vendors selling the same project and shipping to more countries on eBay. Granted, they're a bit more expensive than the Amazon link I provided... but there are other avenues to get one of these in other countries. http://www.geekgot.com/trail-cams-game-camera-viewerusb-sd-card-reader-for-apple-iphone-ipadmemory-micro-sd-card-adapter-with-lightning-cable-view-deer-and-other-wildlifes-photos-and-videos-from-best-hunting-cams-pid-10.html https://www.ebay.com/itm/Geekgo-USB-Lightning-SD-Card-Reader-for-Apple-iPhone-iPad-Memory-Micro-Adapter/162902223990?epid=17011069677&hash=item25edbaac76:g:EqcAAOSwTIhahFDL
  8. Sorry about that There are other similar products, but this is the only one I can vouch for with personal experience.
  9. I've recently migrated to a very elegant and inexpensive solution with many more benefits over the Photos app route. You have to use their free app iUSB Pro, but it gives you much more control over the files, retains the original file name, allows you to open-in either the jpeg OR the raw, and you can save back to your SD card if you wish. Only one caveat, it doesn't create previews for RAW files within the app. I shoot jpeg+raw. So, I just find the image I want to edit via the jpeg previews, then navigate to it's RAW companion. Then, open-in Affinity Photo. Easy-Peasy. I got one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Geekgo-Lightning-Adapter-Wildlife-Hunting/dp/B076NRP6GK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1520285987&sr=8-3&keywords=geekgo Here's my review from Amazon as to why I like this solution:
  10. Doesn’t look like the TagTool app I referenced is working for AirPlay like I described at the moment. The devs say it works in the iOS11.3 beta However, the free Springle app works like this. And, I’d like to add if anyone from Affinity sees this and also thinks this is a great idea for Photo, please make it so that the canvas would use the entire 16:9 external HD screen, and not just the more square 4:3 iPad screen ratio. Springle does this by asking which resolution you want to use. After you launch Springle, then mirror via AirPlay, there’s a prompt asking which resolution you want to use. Currently it caps out at 1920x1080 but it uses the whole screen. 4K would be spectacular. Here’s the link again to the still currently free Springle app. Try it out mirroring to your Apple TV to a large screen display. Notice that the user tools and navigation don’t display on the external display, only the the graphics you’re manipulating on the iPad. Then, image how sweet it would be if you could get Photo to function the same way: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/springle/id628311639?mt=8
  11. Perhaps, but I bet it wouldn’t require much extra coding at all. Could be as simple as “mirror canvas only” in the code. It’s not really that unusual a feature. I’ve got an app like Astropad that functions to sync multiple displays, but if I’m going to do that, I’d likely just use the desktop. Besides, apps like that tend to also require server software running as well. I’m mostly just after a large quick reference. It’s difficult to get a feel for how an image will display large. They can look great on a small iPad screen, but after you see them displayed large you notice things about overall composition that you didn’t realize when you edited it on a a small screen. If you’ve got a larger TV, like in the 50-60in+ range, send a slideshow of your images to it and you’ll see what I mean. Many of today’s TVs on the market are very accurate for color. Not perfect calibration level, but I’ve found them to be an acceptable reference. There’s another one that used to be free (might still be) called Springle. It just makes cool animated kaleidoscopic stuff from color, or you can point it at your camera roll as source. It also only displays the “canvas” only and not the tools to an external display. I was asking here in the outside chance Photo already does this and all I needed was to find the right setting. Here’a that other app I referenced, and it looks to still be free: http://appshopper.com/entertainment/springle
  12. Thanks, but I already have one of these. This method wouldn’t really be any different than airplay mirroring. What I’m after is tools and image on iPad, and just the image updated in real time on external display. There’s an animation iPad app for doing live stage animations for projection via cable, or it works via airplay too. It’s called TagTool https://www.omai.at/ Tagtool works as I’m describing. It’s be cool if Photo did too. That way, you could do fine detail work on the iPad, but also have a large display for reference or to also magnify for details.
  13. I know you can mirror Photo to a large screen or projector via airplay, but is there a way to just send the image area to an external display? ie. You'd use the touch-based tools on the iPad, but the image alone would be mirrored with near realtime edits while you worked on the iPad? Perhaps using Roku, or your desktop monitor instead? Yes, I know I can simply use my desktop install of Photo for work where I'd like to use a larger monitor, but I've becoming more fond of the iPad interface versus the desktop interface. Likely, because I've not spent more time with the iPad version, but a way to use it together with a larger display would be nice. Anyone figured out a way to do this or a work-around that achieves the same result?
  14. My experience with the Air 2 from AP's revision of about 3 or 4 builds ago... was that it ran fine but crashed a lot. HOWEVER, after I got an iPad Pro 10.5, it was also crashing a lot. As the iOS updates have come, together with the last few AP updates... it's much more stable and solid to use now. I would guess it's now completely useable on an Air 2. That's more of am experienced best guess though, as I don't have an Air 2 install to compare the Pro to anymore.
  15. I think it's supposed to work, but I had no luck with it. I'm using the latest update of Dropbox and the latest iOS11.2.6 My experience so far has been that save in place isn't quite there yet. I *can* work fairly well in some workflows, but not in all. There's another thread here that I outlined in detail my own experiences of what works and what doesn't work very well quite yet. The rest of the app overall seems to be getting more solid/stable with the latest update... so that's good news. Still a few wrinkles, but getting ever so much closer. If there's a secret to getting it to work with Dropbox that someone else has figured out, I'd like to know too.
  16. By the way, even though deleting Photo and reinstalling didn’t completely alleviate the issues with save in place, it did improve matters considerably.
  17. Interesting, and good to know. I would’ve thought the TG5 would be supported by now. I have the TG4 for travel, and love it. Was thinking of updating to the TG5, but maybe I’ll hold off until RAW is supported. I’m not a huge fan of shooting everything raw like some are, but I’ve found with these small sensor compacts, raw can make a big difference.
  18. My testing/frantic troubleshooting was all over the place at one point, but I vaguely remember a save in place working with Dropbox once. Then, everything kind of went to hell (weird Files behavior and more of the trouble with helping software dialogue box) with trying to make Dropbox work, so I abandoned the effort. I was to the brink of completely giving up on this, until I realized the Goodreader angle seemed to be far less problematic. Stable even. Decided I would just stick with what appears to work for now, and follow along with what others experience... until perhaps it gets sorted out in another update. Could easily be Apple’s Files app that’s the culprit too. Hard to say at this point, but I’m not having any other issues with the Files app when using other apps like LumaFusion, etc. So, I think it has to have something to do with Affinity’s implementation. My best guess is something gone awry with whatever this “helper application” is that’s referenced in the failure pop-up boxes.
  19. Out of everything I've tried... there's one scenario that DOES seem to work somewhat consistently. Set Photo General setting to "On my iPad". Open image from anywhere, then "save as copy" into either the Photo folder within "On my iPad". OR, if I'm going to trade file edits between desktop Affinity Photo and iPad Photo... save as a copy to a folder in my GoodReader folder. I use the GoodReader app for a few things, but mostly to interface with my SMB RavPower device. If I "save a copy" into the GoodReader folder that's within the iCloud Drive section... I can then open it via my desktop Photo app, make a few edits, then save. If I want to open that desktop edited file in iPad Photo, I need to quit out of the app if it's still open, then relaunch it. At this point I can see the desktop edited version and open that on the iPad to edit. This works fairly consistently visa-versa. If I then try to change the setting in General Settings to "iCloud Drive" from "On my iPad", this is where things get really buggy. Seems like you have to pick one or the other and stick with it. Based on what I've seen so far... I'd guess there's a combination of things causing problems. These may be related strictly to the Files app, or Photo... or whatever "helper software" is being used to interface between the two. I think there may be some timing issue going on, ie. the user thinks the file is saved because it doesn't look like it's "saving" anymore, so the user closes the file that's still actually being saved. I don't know enough about how this stuff is programmed to speculate on this much... but I've noticed if I wait longer between saving, closing, opening from cloud, etc. I get more successes than app failures that way. And, I've found no way to "save in place" using Dropbox. Seems like someone said that was possible, but it's never worked for me at all in any of the troubleshooting I've been doing. I can open from Dropbox, and save files back to Dropbox... but the "save in place" feature seems to strictly for use within iCloud Drive or On my iPad. All that being said, the scenario using GoodReader is acceptable for now. It achieves the same goal ultimately. And it appears fairly stable doing it that way. I've found that after I've changed the General settings from "On my iPad" to "iCloud Drive", Photo creates an Affinity folder within the iCloud Drive. Using the "On my iPad" with GoodReader combo that I outlined above... it appears that I need to delete the Affinity folder that Photo created. I'm guessing that Photo gets confused if there's both a "Photo" folder in the "On my iPad" section AND an "Affinity" folder within the iCloud Drive section.
  20. Backed up all my work files. Deleted Photo. Reinstalled. Reinstalled all brushes and macros... and started over. This still isn't working for me consistently at all. Sometimes it works, sometimes I get a white screen. Sometimes Photo shows ALL of my folders in my Files App to be completely empty, including all of the clouds services. When it does this I have to restart and start all over. I think I'm going to just accept that this save in place feature isn't quite ready for prime time. It's not even working correctly between desktop Affinity Photo and iPad Photo... doing everything EXACTLY the way it's described in the tutorial video. I got it to work once, and that was with the iCloud Drive setting vs the On my iPad setting. But, that only worked once. Failed 3 times after that. I'm running iOS 11.2.6, maybe that update trashed the Files app? Or, maybe 1.6.7 isn't compatible with iOS 11.2.6? Don't know. But I wasted hours last night, and the better part of today trying to troubleshoot why this isn't working and why it seems so buggy interacting with the Files app, etc. Giving up for now and resigning to the fact that maybe next update this stuff will work. I can't waste anymore time on this app. Pity, because I really DO love the app. I just can't use it if getting stuff in to, out of, and saved... is going to be this buggy.
  21. On the product/promo page for the new brush/macro offerings, the Studio Retouch pack has an photo example, then in one of the retouched examples the man in the photo looks like a 3D rendered cartoon version of the original image. Striking really. I wouldn't have guessed that began as an actual photo. Is that work that just took a very long time to do? If not, it'd be awesome if there was a demo video showing how to do that. I'm guessing it's just a lot of over-the-top retouching and using the liquify persona to exaggerate the size of his eyes, etc. but it'd still be cool to watch how something like that is done.
  22. Dang it!!! I’ve done everything according to all of @DM1 suggestions and have watched the interworking tutorial 3 times. I’ve been battling with this since yesterday. I’ve tried the “On my iPad setting”, the iCloud setting... I’ve tried deleting the old Affinity iCloud folder that was created by desktop Affinity Photo. I’ve tried going through Goodreader instead. I’ve tried saving a copy first, etc. Every now and then it’ll work as expected. Then the very next time I try the exact same thing, it won’t work. Or, I’ll get just a blank white screen when trying to open from cloud. Or, I’ll get an error that says photo can’t communicate with “helper software” Do I really have to save a copy of everything, then delete, reinstall, then reimport ALL of my brushes and macros all over again just to find it basically doesn’t work as it’s supposed to?! AGAIN!!!??? %@#$&#$@#@ Affinity coding chaps... this is REALLY starting to get old. I’m sorry to be all negative again, but I bought into this at launch. I bought a new iPad Pro to run this... sometimes it works just fine, but I had high hopes this update would be “the one” where I could finally start using Photo as a professional tool. So far, it’s mostly just cost me A LOT of extra money and time troubleshooting, without much actual photo editing to show for it. Honestly, the last time (recently) that I had a bunch of images that needed to be edited on the road, I just went back to my old solid standby Snapseed for all the editing. Ok, off to spend the next couple of hours starting all over once again, though... I’m about to throw in the towel on the dream of Photoshop level photo editing on the iPad
  23. By the way, I have yet to get this to work. I’ve tried the on the iPad and on iCloud settings. Neither saves back using the bigger save after opening from cloud.
  24. @DM1 thx. Yep, sounds like the very same thing demo’d in the interworking tut. And I just looked up TGA. I thought it sounded familiar. Targa files. Man, I haven’t seen a Targa file in a couple decades. Didn’t know they were still used, but evidently the format is used with Avid systems and some graphics cards using True Color on PCs. I almost vaguely remember using TGA Targa files with the Commodore Amiga back in the day for video stuff.
