  1. Thanks Mike I hadn't thought about the absolute page numbering detail. I had forgotten about using Pagemaker. I feel certain that when moving Indesign pages in a book with say roman numeral prelims say—i,to xvi— then that was treated as a section so moving a group of arabic numbered pages would move only those pages so you didn't need to add 16pp to your selection. I will be interested to see how this progresses. Thanks for the history
  2. Thanks for the update Mike. Do you have any idea why they can't introduce this option? As a book designer it is essential to be able to move pages around, even magazines and programs are subject to last minute changes which require not only movement of images and text but pages. Anyway you will know all about that sort of process. Is there anywhere where a list of requirements could be suggested for future updates? Cheers
  3. Hi Will I first wrote this question a couple of versions ago. I haven't bought V2 only because my mac OS is 10.13.6 High Sierra. ( I keep this because of other programs which I use become subscription with the next upgrade) Anyway does V2 of AfPub have the ability to move pages with a dialogue box as Indesign does. I sincerely hope so because the suggested option is very very tiresome. I look forward to an answere whenever you have time. ps I looked at several of the videos of the V2 and couldn't find any which addressed the moving page options. Or any questions I could ask.......
  4. This change in ownership should has created a huge (?) storm of comment. See a screen grab of my emails. Normally one or two might appear as I have listed to see who is joining Affinity. Looking for other like minded designers. Now many are concerned about the future. As several have said before the learning curve for design programs is so long it isn't possible or desirable to continually relearn new programs. I am at the end of a 50yr design life which began with marking up text for monotype setting and pasting up galley proofs for publishers to check. Then Litho artwork with Rubylith and overlays, then Pagemaker, Quark, Indesign and now Affinity. All doing what I could do with a type scale, Rotring pen on a drawing board. All those brain cells wasted on learning redundant operations and now Af looks like it may head down the same route. Instead of wasting all those hours on design programs I could have learned a couple more languages or be a musician and still be home in time for tea.
  5. I just tried to see what Canva does and here is the first reason to stop looking. I couldn't see anything unless I signed in. Why? I didn't bother.
  6. Will Affinity go like Freehand which was bought by Adobe and killed off? Or will it finish up like other Adobe products which have so many icons and smart keys they don't fit on the screen. To make paying for the product you have to keep adding features until it becomes unworkable.
  7. This post is to find other designers who may use Blurb, an American company which sources print output for their books in Europe and Australia and probably other countries as well. Blurb is a print on demand company. The standard of production is high and their response to questions excellent. The only downside is their link to Adobe and Indesign for production from PDF files. They also have their own book designing software which is good for non designers. I am interested in finding other designers who may wish to exchange ideas and possibly see if AfPub is able to produce an interface with Blurb although that would be a remote possibility. nb I have no links to Blurb other than have had them print several of my books. Most books were designed using Indesign however when it became a subscription service I changed to Affinity. So now I am fairly good at creating a document which conforms to their specifications which are very rigorous, but understandable. I look forward with interest to see if there are any other users. If you are interested, the following link is a to a book I designed and co authored. Noel Ford is a distinguished artist and teacher at what was Canberra School of Art. The book was printed by Blurb. https://au.blurb.com/b/5662543-noel-ford-artist-teacher cheers adrian
  8. I keep looking for a sensible answer to the ability to insert and move pages in a long document. Obviously this has not been of great concern yet as walt.farrell still suggests cut and paste. I have had several pieces of excellent advice from walt so I take it nothing is happening. I am a book designer although nearing the end of my career and I advise my designer friends to look at Affinity Publisher as an option. However I have to tell the publication designers that they could be in real difficulties in a long publication with the usual number of corrections and changes. Why is it so difficult to white the 'code' which would achieve the ability to move pages via a dialogue box? The sort of options which are available in the other programs look pretty complex. Is the printed or electronic page at the end of the programmers list of jobs to do? I live in hope
  9. Quite true, was hasty in my comment. I will be more circumspect next time
  10. Ok I see that the most recent are on p91. Perhaps for this list the most recent should be at the beginning of the list obviously not on p1
  11. Hi Affinity Persons It is interesting to see the number of creative people involved in developing Affinity programs. My only observation was the dates on the first dozen or so are 2014. There are some from 2015. What has happened in the last 8 years? Not a good look if Affinity doesn't update people introducing themselves. nb I am a Graphic Designer in Canberra Australia.
  12. Hi Paolo I don't anticipate any advances in the near future. I have been a graphic designer for over 50 years and seen all types of systems come and go. Usually innovations are sold as if they are world changing but inevitably they are just hype. Adobe is a leader in hyping up what they do but perhaps not as good at it as Apple. We are beginning the project knowing that we will work with whatever System, Program or App that is available. Always be positive, you just never know something may happen
  13. Obviously many Editors and Designers have expressed the need for AfPub to export an IDML file. I am about to co-design a book with an English designer. He uses InDesign and I now use AfPub. We both worked together in London so we know what we want. I have been trying to work out the best way to design and edit pages and or design separately and combine into one file for publishing. IDML is what is required. How do the programmers and marketers at Affinity decide what is important? Do they survey on line comments or is there a priority list of requirements? From a distance it seems as if the main efforts are being used to sort out 'bugs' which is understandable. What would be interesting to see is a set of goals that Affinity are aiming to complete. Perhaps not enough to alert competition but enough information for users to know that something is happening about a particular requirement. [like moving pages in AfPub from a dialogue box rather than trying to drag pp147-148 back to chapter one after p10...]
  14. HI Walt I note you have commented and assisted on a couple of other occasions when I have struck trouble so I am heartened to read your interest in the topic. However that really isn't an option as in book production there may well be the need to place an image next to a reference so one page is inserted. Adding even numbers of pages often does not make sense to where a chapter need to end on a left hand page, etc. Anyway Affinity needs to get its act together to make this an important upgrade to AfPub cheers Adrian
  15. I totally agree with your comment. I moved the AfPub so as to avoid the domination of Adobe and also to support the principles behind Affinity. However they seem to be concentrating on Designer and Photo as most of the 'owners' of the apps probably don't do any book or publishing work. Perhaps there could be a subset of AfPub users who could get together to lobby for more attention to be paid to the printed word. Any takers? cheers
  16. Thanks for that. I will try the BE out later and also take your advice about old fonts and their limitations. I will look at the options you mentioned. Thanks again
  17. Hi Libre T I looked at the Indestructible site which seems very good however if you were able to send me a conversion that would be very welcome. I will mention the site to the partner who now owns my old studio just to see if she has any problems with fonts and the possibility of adapting them. She has all the latest versions of the Adobe products so perhaps that has already been solved. One of the reasons to change to Infinity products is because there isn't an ongoing subscription when I don't earn an income from the design tools. I just use it to keep a few neurons active. cheers Adrian
  18. I was just thinking about the o Kb fonts in the BodonI sent so I attached a screen grab of the fonts as they seem on my computer so they are not Zero. How do I send this set to you? I just dragged the suitcase to the upload space but as you see is says N/A . Done. Bodoni Old Face Expert
  19. Hi Libre T Thank you also for your comment. You are correct that they would be from an old Mac format. I have had these fonts for years. In fact so long I don't remember when they were acquired by my design business. Now I am fully retired from the business side of design and only use the fonts for pdf/cards to friends it doesn't make repurchasing worthwhile. However if I am able to sort the name conflicts I would be more than satisfied. Do you have any suggestions as to how I could correct this naming problem? Thanks
  20. Hi Dan I havspent a little more time in sorting the Bodoni fonts. They are now attached to this file Bodoni Old Face Exp, Berthold.zip Bodoni Old Face, Berthold.zip
  21. Hi Dan Sorry to have not responded earlier. Here is the file with fails, 'AfPub test Ross'. I just failed again with the Bodoni font. Also the file which works 'C and R 8th' I will drag the fonts to the link. Oh, I see I need to drop the files to your link as well. Ok. Sorry I have not been able to upload the Fonts. I think I need a suggestion as to where to locate these files. They are in my Linotype Font Explorer program and they print out to my Epson printer. But, I can't locate them in my System/Library/Fonts/ Very odd but that in itself my be why the pdf fails.. AfPub test Ross.afpub C and R 8th.afpub
  22. Hi Dan Thanks for that info. I am not certain I could follow that process on my Mac. The use of PC terms which I am not familiar with seems a bit of a problem. I would like to try that out to see the cause, if there is a Mac way. More importantly I think I have solved the problem. I placed each item in a new file and then deleted each one before I made the pdf. All pdfs failed until I replaced the font with the other items in place. The last item I removed was the font Bodoni Old Face BE. If I replaced the Bodoni with Whitney, Milo, or any other face I was able to make the pdf. However as Bodoni is a face use in other programs I am interested to see if there is a fault in Bodoni and or something in AfPub. thanks for your time.
