  1. You're right. But the parts are strongly connected. Installing without using doesn't much sense. I was convinced that "Language" in the Preferences/General was related to the document, because most of the options there are related to documents. There is also Preferences/User_Interface. Perhaps it would be more logical to have the Language choice there instead to make clear that it refers to the UI language. Never mind, once you understand you can adapt.
  2. Thanks! I will have to try this out to understand the mechanisms and find the good methodology. I could never have figured this out on my own. Is this well described in the Help? Also, the FAQ documentation, where we started out, might deserve some more details to clarify. Perhaps I also have missed previous forum threads that might have explained this already? I feel that the hyphenation functionality is an absolute must for any type setting of books etc., in particular where column width is relatively small. And the number of potential document languages is quite big -:) I am surprised that this issue has not surfaced many, many times already.
  3. I thought it would be selectable in the drop down list for "Language" in the Edit preferences general panel. I thought that with the new directory I would "add a new language" to APub on par with the ten-ish languages already there. I will have to ´navigate around to find the place that you point out. Not at all intuitive for me. Does it mean that I can't set the language at the document level but only at a paragraph level?
  4. I had tested that also without success, unfortunately. I have tried again without succeeding. Thus: Now the default "additional dictionary folder" is unchanged but it has a new sub-folder (sv_SE) containing the three downloaded files (See first screen shot). But still APub does not make a new language available for selection. The language drop down list is unchanged (Second screen shot above). I would have expected that APub would have scanned the additional dictionaries folder and found the sub folder sv_SE and from that concluded that the new language Swedish was available and would be selectable in the Language drop down menue. .
  5. I still need help. I have downloaded sv_SE.dic, sv_SE.aff and hyph_sv.dic and saved them (with these file extensions) into the new sub-folder sv_SE. They are stored as text documents ("raw format"). I have changed the "Additional dictionary folder" to point to this subfolder with the three files. Restarting APub I would then expect the application to scan the added folder for dictionary data files and make the new language selectable for the document. But despite the additional dictionary no new language appears. What am I doing wrong??
  6. I would appreciate detailed instructions for how to download and install (under Windows) the swedish Hunshell dictionaries for auto hyphenation (and spell check). Even better if the Apub download could contain support for more languages, including swedish. Plans?
  7. Fantastic! I have been poking around to find posts that indicate someone is after this feature. I would have thought that there were hundreds of "non-professionals" struggling to typeset books and not being able to afford Indesign and thus looking for an alternative. That's my case. I have tried the old CC2 of Indesign, but the UI just makes me break down being used to the MS Office world. The UI of AfPub is much, much more intuitive to me and then of course the price that is just awesome. Regarding the merge functionality of "de-duplicate" master pages I believe, as you do, that it soon will work to the spec of the developer posting above. Hassles on the way will certainly be solved. To me the decisive thing is that once the merge will be done, I would hope there is a next step that goes towards the book feature.
  8. Interesting discussion! I am in the situation that I want to achieve the "Book feature" of InDesign. I want to create chapters of my book in separate AfPub documents. Let's assume that the chapters are approx ten pages of raw text and ten photos and callouts per chapter. Typically 15 chapters which translates into 300-400 pages in total for the book. The raw text is imported from a Word manuscript, and all picture mgmt and layout is done in AfPub. During the initial phase of typesetting the layout is very dynamic; photos and callouts are added/removed/restructured repeatedly. In the process I involve different people for feedback for different chapters. I thus want to manage the chapters individually and only later in the process merge the different chapters. It is crucial to still be able to control consistency of the layout between the chapters. So, I thought of creating a template file with layout and styles to become the starting point for each chapter. Then be able to merge the different chapter documents to a "master book document". It seems to me that "Old Bruce" and others in this thread might be in a similar situation, right? That makes the behavior of masterpages and styles crucial. As expected "identical masterpages" seem to "de-duplicate". That's great. What about your experiences regarding Styles? Do they also de-duplicate when identical, as I would hope? And is there a way to determine when Styles are identical? In my case also very generic tables are are part of the game. They are already authored in Word, but with different text styles than the bulk text.
  9. Looking for a substitute for the InDesign Book concept, I am most interested in how the new Merge functionality behaves. In particular regarding how styles from the merged document are managed. Is there any documentation available?
  10. I am playing with the trial since a couple of days as well as learning through tutorials and forums. But I find very little on managing books (in particular with lots of photos) and also not too much on where formatting of text is best done. That's why I asked a very general question on "methodology". A couple of more specific statements: 1. As the layout with photos/pictures is completely left to DTP, I expect the text to float around substantially during the attempts to add illustrations. That brings me to the conclusion that this sandbox environment (in AP) has to be limited to the chapter level to start with. I guess that complexity of 20 pages is typically what you can manage during this stage. Thus I actually would need the "Book" concept as available in ID and discussed repeatedly in this forum. I don't expect that to be available soon in AP. Perhaps can the "Merge" functionality as described in beta 1.8 be a viable manual workaround. Experiences? 2. I am confused how PLACE of .docx files behaves. I feel that I always have a paragraph style (e g Normal, Heading1, Heading2, ...) associated to paragraphs in Word. But most often AP leaves PLACE'd paragraphs with "NoStyle", while sometimes a text style is assigned. What am I doing wrong? 3. Table formatting is, as far as I can tell, not kept when importing from Word, but content with formatting is. I believe that can be managed later in AP.
  11. I am working on a private hobby project to write a book with the following scenario: 1. Approx 300 pages, 20 chapters, 200 photos and pictures, 100 tables (very generic table layout) 2. Raw text and tables authored in Word. Photos/pictures managed separately. To be merged in DTP process. 3. I have fiddled around with InDesign CC2, but I cannot afford later ID subscriptions and therefore I want to avaluate Affinity Publisher (AP). Anyone that have been in a similar situation and can suggest methodology?
