  1. Just following up on this, since there was a recent update in Photos v2 that includes some better integration with Photos.app with the iPad version (according to the release notes anyway). Am I missing something here? I haven't really seen much improvement with this, that I can find out about! There seems to be very limited information, no user instructions, or tutorials that really cover using Affinity Photo with Apple Photos on the iPad. I've just installed the demo of Photo v2, so I could try this out, and it's certainly an improvement for opening/importing an image from Photos, in that I can now browse my own folder/album layout. However, that only brings across a JPEG copy of any image I select, so doesn't seem possible to open any original Raws that way (it says Open or Place in the blurb, but it actually seems limited to 'import' only, not 'open'). I can only see that using the old Shortcut workaround to send the image from Photos is the only way to open a Raw from Photos into Affinity. Then it's just back to the old Share method, which just saves a JPEG copy straight to the main Library, there's no option to even send it to the album it came from. My workaround for that is to create an Affinity Editing album, and use another shortcut to save it to that. That then involves manually putting the image into the album I wanted it to go into, but as a separate saved copy alongside the original. Unfortunately, if this is all it can do, then it's still not a workable solution for me. It's a shame, as I do like Affinity Photo, it's tools are excellent, but this inability to properly integrate with Photos.app is just a deal breaker (I'd like to see it working in a similar fashion to Photomator, or Raw Power, for example, where I can browse and open an original image, and save it as though it had been edited in Photos itself).
  2. Hi guys, I realise we've had this discussion before with V1 of Affinity Photo. However, this is one of the biggest stumbling blocks I have to making any real use of AP ion an iPad, and upgrading to V2. The desktop version integrates so well with Apple Photos, yet the iPad version seems a complete bodge. At the least, have you improved the library navigation, so we don't get a random flat list of all the albums? (which have been carefully organised into logical folder/albums sets in Photos). I'm sticking to V1 at the moment, as I'm reluctant to pay for an upgrade if this at least hasn't been improved. I've read a few forum threads on this, and it does appear to be causing problems for some users. Particularly the Shortcut workaround, which is somewhat erratic in how reliable it is. Of course compared to other apps, there is certainly a fair bit of variation as to how well any of them get this to work. It's certainly possible for the iPad users though - both Pixelmator and Raw Power make this a really seamless operation, and maintain non-destructive editing. Are there any plans at all to improve this functionality? Cheers. Andy
  3. Yes, I like to put my photos into folder/album sets, mainly based on the year/month/event kind of layout. This means I can work with small, and relevant sets of images, organised how I want to see them. Affinity does not honour this layout (nor do a few others to be fair - it's one of the things that ever stopped me paying for Darkroom too). I'm not sure I understand how anyone would work with their library if they had more than a few hundred in there (57,000 in mine). Scrolling through all of my images to find the one I want to edit is not practical. Paired with the fact that Affinity doesn't save/export the image back to the same location, and doesn't link it to the original photo, does give it limited use when used with Photos. It's OK for the occasional creative edit (not my forte really, I dabble occasionally), but exporting, importing, and then exporting and reimporting seems the simplest way to get the image from Photos to Affinity and back to the right album again. Not something I want to do for a batch of a few hundred photos from a holiday. Cheers.
  4. There is some integration, as it is possible to open an image from my iCloud library, but it's not practical. It's been discussed in these forums, but I guess not many users access their images from Photos. It looks like it's more common to open directly from Files. If I try to navigate to an image in Photos, it presents me with a flat list of my albums. Which are in fact neatly organised inside folders in a sorted order. Affinity does not show this, it only shows a (seemingly) random flat list of all my albums (of which there are hundreds), so is impractical to navigate to any given album, or individual image. It is possible to send an image from Photos, but this requires setting up a workaround Shortcut, which is not always reliable. Even when you do get an image into Affinity from Photos, it's then not saved back into the same Album, nor is it integrated into the original source image as an edited version. It just appears in the main library, so has to be located into the album again, but is also a separate image, unlinked to the the original. We know all this is possible, as many other apps work fine in this fashion. It has also been confirmed that Affinity Photo does not work with Photos any better than that. I was hoping that V2 might have improved on this, but it seems not. Cheers.
  5. My V1 of Affinity Photo is basically an expensive icon on my iPad Home Screen. Due to the poor integration with Apple Photos, I almost never use it. I can’t find anything about this at all in any of the information for V2, can anyone confirm if this has been improved at all? My hope is that I’ve simply not found it yet, by fear is that nothing has changed at all. Cheers. Andy
  6. Yes, I agree, it's really about time now. I basically have Affinity Photo sat on my devices being completely unused for some time now. This thread was started over four years ago, and no sign of any kind of attempt to address this. The inability to open an image in AP from the Photos library, and save it back after editing, is so much of a stumbling block. For sure there are 'workarounds' to partially fix it, but not to any extent that makes this usable on anything kind of useful scale. Clearly the routine is possible, as other apps do have such capabilities.
  7. I've mentioned this a fair bit in the past too, although it doesn't seem to be something of great priority. It's preventing me from making any real use of Affinity these days, although I own it on both macOS and iPadOS, it's the iPad I work on the most now (being far more up-to-date, faster and better resolution). I'm only a 'hobbyist', so don't really miss the advanced features that much. With a variety of other apps, such as Raw Power and Pixelmator integrating well with Photos, there are ways and means. It's a shame I think, that I've never really bothered to learn that much of Affinity's capabilities, as I just can't make it work well in my system.
  8. I’ve now found where those ‘Saved’ images went, they just get bunged back into the main “All Photos’ level of the library. At least that’s doing something, but why not at least have the ability to send the thing back to the album it came from? I have 60,000 images there, so at the moment, with the flat list of the albums, Affinity is not making it easy to develop a sensible workflow. cheers.
  9. Many thanks for that info. Sadly it’s only served to confirm my doubts about the workflow. I have tried Documents by Readdle, but didn’t find it so useful for me. It’s not really fixing the problem though, just choosing a different route to the same end. I was actually hoping for a similar workflow to Raw Power and Pixelmator Photo, both of which access the Photos library seamlessly, where it’s possible to open, view and edit images directly in the library, working with the existing non-destructive workflow. A system where I need to basically import, edit, export, reimport, is not one I’m interested in, as it means duplicated images, and a clunky way of managing them. It’s a system I was using when I first started taking digital pictures 20 years ago. The annoying part is that all this works perfectly on the Desktop version, which I have trialled. However, as I’m using an ageing iMac 2013, it’s not a plan for going forward. I had a look at Pixave, but an abandoned, three year old app, is not really a future proof plan either. I do have HashPhotos installed, which is in development, but it’s also a little quirky. I use that mostly for accessing EXIF data. As for there not being a DAM at all on iPad, perhaps that’s not entirely accurate. Raw Power has an excellent set of management tools, and Pixelmator isn’t too bad either, both can manage directly in the Photo library, or into Files. HashPhotos is also a very good DAM. Of course nothing is perfect, I never found that workflow Nirvana on the Desktop either. However, most apps are almost there, but each has something missing, and something it can do that the others can’t. Affinity is without doubt probably the best image editor there is, but it fails miserably with the integration that the others offer, and makes using it in a busy workflow rather impractical on a mobile device. For now, I’m keeping with my Photos+RawPower+Pixelmator setup, and resort to using Affinity on the desktop when I have to. cheers.
  10. Here are some screen shots for clarity; This first one shows my basic albums layout, showing folders that contain my albums, along with my working folders (mainly created as a workaround). Note that these screenshots only show a fraction of the albums I have available. This next one shows my albums as I have them filed inside each folder, with a revers date system (helps with sorting if date stamps are off) This is what I see if I try to use the ‘import from Photos’ function. Note the erratic nature of the sorting. Finally, this is what I see if I try the Export function, and use Share to a Photos album. This list contains all my albums, note the inconsistent sorting again. The contents of these albums generally have the right date stamps on the images. The ‘!New Images’ album is actually empty, so it’s difficult to understand if any kind of sorting is being used. I’ve not even found the 2021 albums yet.
  11. I think you're misunderstanding. I already have a set of folders and albums created in Photos. I have a layout with 20 years worth of digital photos in them, separated by year, and into albums per day event. I also have others for scanned in images, stock images, images from others, WhatsApp collected images, and so on, as well as a few other collections, such as holiday albums and so on. I have dozens of folders, and hundreds of albums. This is essentially a legacy of using Lightroom for a few years, where I replicated the filing system I used there, although my filing system has been evolving over those 20 years to what I have now. Affinity Photo places all the albums I have into a flat list, no folder separation, in no particular order, so it's impossible to find anything quickly by using any kind of alphanumeric system. I've even tried using a naming system putting a special character a the beginning of the name, to try an force an album to the beginning, which does work with most apps, but not with AP. To be able to use that function on my library, I'd have to manually hunt through either 60,000 images in the 'All' section, or hundreds of albums in a random order. I'll take some screen shots later and post them if it'll help understand, but essentially I see the same layout you show above, but mine has all my hundreds of albums there. There seems to been way to filter them down, or create a smaller working set. Cheers.
  12. I can’t believe how long this request has been running. I’m trying to move to a more iPad-centric setup, and in the main it’s working fine for my hobbyist needs. The lack of proper integration with Photos is a big stumbling block though. Now, in Raw Power and Pixelmator, it’s a trivial matter to locate, edit, and save an image within the Photos library. Both allow me to browse my Photos folder and album structure as it is set out. Indeed, Raw Power is even better than Photos itself. So I can edit either a single image, or a batch, and save them in their original locations in the library. I notice that Affinity does have an Import from Photos menu item. But as it only shows a flat list of albums, in some undetermined order, it’s completely impractical to use. Like another user, I have created a nice chronological folder/album hierarchy, with thousands of albums, but the fashion of the layout makes it easy for me to find stuff. AP is supposed to be one of the best photo editors out there, but it’s like having the best motor car in the world, and you forgot to put doors on it. Please could you guys have a look at implementing something here? Clearly it’s possible, as many other apps manage it fine. Cheers Andy
  13. Thanks for that, I’ve got that shortcut created, but it’s not doing what I was expecting. I was thinking that the Save Image function would put the edited version into the library over the original in the Photos library. This is what happens when using the Desktop version of AP, and with any of the other iPad photo apps. This shortcut is also unusable, as it still suffers with the same silly album flat list that the Import from Photos button has, and finding an appropriate album to save to is nigh impossible. If this process works using the ‘Import from Photos’ button, then the simplest solution for me is for Affinity to honour the folder/album layout from the library. I’ll put a feature request in the appropriate forum. cheers. Andy.
  14. I have to say that I hardly use Affinity Photo on my iPad, the workflow is simply too clunky. Indeed, I can only get it to half work at all. I’ve got the Shortcut setup to send an image to Affinity from Photos, which is fine. I carry out some edits, then try to save it back again. I’m using the File/Export function, and then clicking the Share button to select the Save Image item. But nothing is happening there, it’s not getting back to Photos. Now, I also use Raw Power and Pixelmator, both of which integrate nicely with Photos, so we know it’s possible. But I also notice that these also bring up a dialogue asking permission to modify the Photos library whenever an image is saved. Affinity does not do this, so I’m guessing that the save operation is maybe being blocked. To be brutally honest though, the import/export/save functionality between AP and Photos is terrible. I would use the + and ‘Import from Photos’ function, but that’s pretty useless with an unworkable flatview of the albums - I have mine in a nicely organised folder/album layout, and I have a lot of albums. It’s totally impractical to find anything in the AP dialogue. I did try using a working ‘!Affinity Editing’ album, hoping that might sort near to the beginning, but I’ve not found it yet (even a ‘sort’ button might at least be a bit of a workaround). Any suggestions for improving this? cheers Andy
