  1. And they call it a solution for PROFESSIONAL layout design. This is a workaround, but it's not how professionals should have to work because of bad software. I've dumped Affinity for now until this is resolved and instead am using Clip Studio which takes 1/10th of the Ram for the same size files.
  2. I have a screaming fast AMD Ryzen 3600 series 6 core processor at 3.6GHz with a Radeon rx 500 series running 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO (2x16GB) DDR4 3200MHz computer running Windows 10, everything on this machine is ridiculously fast. Except Publisher. It takes Publisher about 10 to 20 minutes on this system to export a PDF. Here is a screenshot of Publisher around 15 minutes after saving a PDF file, emphasis on the word after- the process is no longer running, the computer should be pretty much idle, but ALL the available RAM is being used. The solid state disc is at 100% usage. The next set of screenshots is the same file being run on Clip Studio Paint. The first is while the program is actually importing all 187 pages. Next image is Clip Studio Paint rendering an EPUB from those 187 pages modifying each image to fit the profile setup, so there is a lot of rendering going on. When the computer idles, the memory goes down to around twice the file size, pretty normal stuff. We've got a problem. It's similar performance with Affinity Photo, but the latest releases have sometimes fixed the problem, sometimes it seems to come back. I've run Affinity on 4 different machines and bought this latest machine thinking that there is no way Affinity can possibly fill up all the memory on a machine like this. Why would any program need 10x the memory of the file itself? Why doesn't the program release the memory it is not using.
  3. I embarked on raising money for a charitable cause, rallying artists and contributing my own art and resources. No staff, 70+ contributors, no salary, just goodwill. I am an idiot and all the responsibility rests on my shoulders, however...I took Affinity at it's word. I am an idiot for assuming that a company that touts it's software "Professional Desktop Publishing Software" would not have considered the EPUB market- a relatively new, untested, untried obscure format used by twelve people... oh c'mon, seriously, EPUBs are approximately 19% of the book sales market. 1 out of 5 books sold are e-books. Setting that aside, I appreciate your suggestion of SIGIL, although it will require yet another few days of commitment to learning a new, free bit of software--time I would rather spend writing glowing rave reviews about Publisher. I have approximately 8 pages (including TOC) that are text pages, everything else is simply TIFF files. Ingram has a +/- 100MB limit and restrictions on the pixels per page (resolution height x width in pixels) so I'll see if I can get acceptable results. The other suggestions are not applicable but appreciated. It's a shame we are talking about SIGIL on an Affinity forum and not Affinity, but such is life when one believes the adverts. It won't happen again!
  4. One again, I feel like an idiot. I've been looking for affordable solutions for students. I decided to do a major project using only Affinity products, after a year of testing, I thought I had a good handle on the shortcomings and workarounds necessary. Today, I am shocked, flattened, completely discouraged to discover on the day I'm uploading files to the printer, EPUB is not supported. Why? My project can't go through, NONE of it can go through until I upload both the print AND digital edition. Ingram Spark ONLY accepts EPUB format. Countless hours wrangling 70 artists and writers, refining layout, typesetting and everything that goes with it and now I have no idea how I am going to resolve this latest setback because I trusted Affinity at their word when they say, "Bring your vision to life with Affinity Publisher, the next generation of professional publishing software. From magazines, books, brochures, posters, reports and stationery to other creations, this incredibly smooth, intuitive app gives you the power to combine your images, graphics and text to make beautiful layouts ready for publication." Also, on a different topic, IDML import does not work, not even slightly. Professional? Not yet. So once again, I've been burned for sticking with Affinity. I just don't know if I can trust Affinity again. Prove me wrong.
  5. Totally agree. I cannot teach with Affinity as this is just a non-starter. I don't know how important it it for photography, but for art and design (especially comcis) it is crucial. Just a tiny example- coloring Select area- click lasso tool, it doesn't work with a tablet, why? Oh polygonal is not selected. -Select polygonal. Start selection, add to selection, doh! It defaulted to New -Select Add Sample color to fill selection -click paintbucket It's selected gradient fill for some reason, -click until you get the paintbucket Fill the area, woah, it filled more than the solid color I clicked on -adjust tolerance to 2 or 0 instead of the default of 20 Fill the selection Switch to lasso- what? Everything has been reset to default. How am I supposed to give these instructions to students? Answer, I can't. If it doesn't work, they go to some freebie software on their phone and their work looks lousy. The end.
  6. Wonderful, this is a feature I've been looking forward to, however I do not see it in the preferences panel. Where is it hiding? "Added "Use Windows Ink for tablet input" preference (enabled by default, disable to use WinTab)"
  7. I appreciate is your suggestions, (and no, I cannot upload the unpublished copyright protected work.) It is not a file issue, it's the same for all documents which I'm currently developing. What I've done to workaround the issue is to modify Base and add a hotkey shortcut to it. Luckily I only have that one style that needs the shortcut or else I'd need a crib sheet to keep track of all the styles and shortcuts. Thanks for the tip, but this is not a solution, just a workaround in case any developers are listening.
  8. Thanks for your replies. After a few days of using Publisher, it suddenly started to remember the docs and panels, etc when I open a document. However, the most recent release, when I customize a style, say I either create a new style or modify "body" to use a font, Komika, Arial, doesn't matter. I want all the body text to be 9 point, so I modify that. I close the style, nothing has happened to the text block that I had selected when I made the modifications to the style. OK. So I still have the text box active and click on text style "body" presto... nothing happens. The text is not modified. I double click and the Edit Text Styles dialog comes up, the box "apply to style" is not checked, although it was (forgot to mention in the last step) so I will check it and this time, it works. So I move to the next box, activate it, click on body, nothing happens, double click, dialog box, click the checkbox, it works. I have to do this for over 100 pages. The entire reason for a "style" is to be able to apply it quickly. In every other program, it's a one click operation. Bruce, Murfee, Walt you can't possibly think this is normal or desirable or am I missing something?
  9. Walt, exactly, they should, but they don't, so each time I open a document I'm resetting my workspace. I think the program itself is suffering some memory issues, it is often asking me to relink things, which does not work as expected, I click on the resource so it's highlighted, click the find button, nothing. I have to choose "replace". When scrolling through the document, it gets startled and shuts down. Old Bruce, are you saying that forgetting how someone sets up their workspace is forgotten by design? Poor design if that is the case. Styles- I highlight text or a text box, either way result is the same, the style is not applied when I click or double click in the styles panel. What is the point of the style panel if I can't apply the style with a click? I have to go up to the dropdown menu, or customize the style each time, as stated, I have to open the style and manually select "apply this style to the selection". I am running a brand new Cyberpower PC GMA4200BST with Ryzen 5 3600 3.6GH and Radeon RX 580 8GB with Vengeance RGB Pro DDR4 32GB RAM 3200Mhz so more than enough power for desktop publishing.
  10. Whenever a document is opened in Affinity Publisher it is a blank slate rather than the state of the interface when it was last saved. For example, I'm working on a large document, the TOC is key to organizing the content. Each time the program crashes, which is constant, or saved, which I do often, upon returning to work I notice that the TOC panel is gone, the styles do not work so they must be opened individually and the box checked to apply style to selection and a dozen other preferences that I have carefully curated to speed my workflow. It might not sound like a big deal, but it is making it near impossible to work. I've not found anything in the forums or tutorials nor the preferences panels that would help.
  11. I agree, I'm working on a document which is over 150 pages, clicking and dragging is not an ideal solution imagine dragging 7 pages from page 125 to page 3, there should be a way to just select "move after x page " or "move after x page" dialog, I'd like to see this feature and perhaps testing the software with large projects in mind.
  12. THANKS I've been searching high and low and I can't get my old photoshop screentones to work. These are great.
  13. Sorry, but the math does not add up. I'm having a similar problem. The file in question is 21 mb on disk, exported it's around 300 mb, but it is using 10GB of memory or put another way, 10,000 MB RAM for a document that is a fraction of that and I'm not counting the disk space it is using. The same thing was happening with the latest release (at the time) of Affinity Photo AND Designer until I reverted to an earlier release. This worked for months until this week I noticed it doing the same. A simple file of 80MB or so will take 8,000MB of RAM. This is not beta software, I've brought this up in the forums before as well as many other people, and I never seem to find an answer. I've used Adobe CC, Medibang, Krita, Gimp, Inkscape, DAZ 3d, Sketchup and more on this same system and have never experienced this sort of lag time. I don't think it is a question of our files, but of how Affinity is handling data and how it is holding it in memory. Long after I shut down the programs, the memory stays in use. I still cannot recommend any of your software to my students, but look forward to a day when there is a viable option.
  14. Well, that might have worked then, but there is no "constraints" panel under View > Studio > and it makes no sense that simply grouping together items should cause them to disappear. I group items so that I can make quick changes to a grouped set, and perhaps hide them form time to time. Unclear why the default behaviour is to say, "hmm, the user wants to associate these things, let's just make them disappear instead." Goes counter to every design software out there, and not just adobe.
  15. What is truly frustrating is that we have to work with speed and accuracy. I am looking at the art when I work. I count on the shortcut key to work AS EXPECTED, and not whatever flavor of the day the shortcut key seems to want to offer. I'll be painting with a brush, select a color with the wand, I go back to the brush and it won't paint, again and again because it defaults sometimes to "color replacement" brush or "pixel tool" there seems to be no rhyme or reason. All I know is that I have to stop my inspired brushstroke to figure out what went wrong. It would make sense to have the shortcut default to the last use tool IMHO.
  16. You have to be kidding me! I find out now? I'm working on an 11"x17" document at 600 DPI because it will be enlarged for large posters and needs to be shrunk for web use. It would be a terrible practice to go in and change the DPI settings of the actual document for each export. I would imagine the file will become degraded with each resizing/resampling, n'est pas? There has to be a better way than changing document size!
  17. I'm having the same issue immediately after upgrading to the latest verision of AP. 7310MB for a file that is 122MB when saved. My computer crashed several times and is struggling to keep up with the simplest tasks like sampling a single color with the eyedropper, or taking one step back in history.
  18. Nevermind, I fixed it, I just had to restart the program. For some reason it stopped working mid-stroke during a drawing. I guess the solution is to restart the program. If it occurs again, I'll follow up.
  19. It is every brush I tested, all of which came with Affinity, no third party brushes or customized brushes every other piece of software on my desktop; commercial, freeware, tablet pressure testing and tablet tracking software recognizes pressure and draws smooth as silk lines The tablet is an Ugee 15" tablet monitor Hope that is enough to go on, I have a project due and was counting on Affinity!
  20. The brush is not behaving as it was in a previous version. I could count on a very smooth line while drawing in pixel mode and an even smoother line when using the stabilizer tool. All I can manage now is a choppy, staccato line with angular curves. I've labeled the image to give you a better sense of the problem, showing the results with and without the stabilizers. All other programs on this computer and tablet combination are working properly. Thanks
