What is the purpose of the 'Mitre' figure in the Line style box?If I put in a figure of 1 and select a square corner it chops off part of the corner. Changing the value to 2 gives me a square corner when I select square corner. Changing the value to 5 gives me the same chopped off corner as value of 1.

The mitre value you need to avoid a sharp corner getting chopped off depends on the angle of the corner. With a right-angle, the default value of 1.414 gives a sharp corner. With a more acute angle, for example from the points of a star or triangle, a bigger value is needed. If the corner angle is the same, changing from 2 to 5 should not change it from pointy to chopped off.

The exact value is the ratio of the width of the line to the length the corner extends past the corner point. The default value is actually the square root of 2, which arises from the geometry of a right angle.

Hi Dave,

Now I understand! Thank you for the information. I can see the connection with 1.414 and root 2 - very clever!

This feature obviously comes into its own when using acute angles.

Is there not a way of setting 2 as a default for getting square corners?

Is there a way of reducing the dark grey background to the pallets? It is very difficult to see which style for line alignment has been chosen. Either that or make the style boxes black, white and blue.

If you change it to 2, that should be the default for new objects until you change it again. If you use Edit > Defaults > Save, it will be the default for new documents, too, and for the Revert Documents button on the toolbar. This will actually save all of the object defaults, including colours, font etc, so you might want to do a Revert first to get everything into a known state so you only change what you intend to change.
