So no, there is no own build-in Media- or Image-Browser (also not in Macs anymore), you have to use the OS related system Explorer/Finder or some other third party tool in order to get an overview. On the Mac side, this is set at the system, not application level. It is not confined to photo files; instead, it is the last n files of any type the app can open, where n is the number set in System Preferences > General > Recent Items.
