AD/AP: Plea for more contrast on tool icon background

I have a difficulty identifying at a glance which tool on the toolbar is selected. I've mentioned this before and someone suggested I play with UI gamma; this did help, but not enough. 

Please, Affinity, give me some way to solve the problem by adjusting the tool icon background color or displaying the name of the active tool on the screen or, preferably, both. The way things are it just plain takes me too long to identify the active tool.

I wonder if there's a way to replace the icons with ones of my own design. Actually, I'd be surprised if there isn't - has anyone looked into this?
