Spreads become pages upon export as PDF

When I export a project as a PDF, spreads are counted as pages in the PDF file. For example, a 6x9 print document with twenty pages becomes a 12x9 with ten pages on export as a PDF.

Is your document a facing page document and are you specifically selecting All Pages as the export area?
