Previews of Affinity images in Photo Mechanic

Recommended Posts

Please, in order to be able to see previews of Affinity images in Photo Mechanic, they (the people in Camera Bits) would like you could document how to access a preview from your file format or even better, provide an open source library for generating previews of your file format. Thanks a lot!

I've just been looking on the Camera Bits forum about this too. The latest I could find is an offer from Camera Bits Support to address if:

I think those other products (and the Finder) are using the "Quick Look" plugin.  If the Affinity Photo folks will provide documentation for their format (at least enough to extract previews) then we'll try to support it.

It would be great to be able to see afphoto files on the contact sheet along with other thumbnails.

What is the latest on this please? I searched but couldn't find anything...

Regards

From my limited understanding, both Windows and macOS provide standard interfaces for extracting a thumbnail from any file, and those interfaces should work with the Affinity files, too.

Thanks Walt. The default behaviour hoped for is that when one opens a contact sheet in Photo Mechanic this would result in all photo files that one would expect to be able to select to work with would be displayed as thumbnails and not as the .afphoto extension icon. It seems CameraBits are offering to help if Serif/Affinity can provide the info requested.

It sounds like they may want to read the file themselves, parse it, and extract a preview. Instead, if my understanding is correct, they should just use the standard interfaces to extract the thumbnail. That can work, I think, without any additional information from Serif.

As far as I know Serif does not provide information about their file formats.

XnViewMP can display thumbnails from the Affinity files, for example.
