DavidMac Posted September 24, 2016 Posted September 24, 2016 I have a library of JPGs of cut out figures with clipping paths. In PS, after loading the file, I would open the Paths Pallette, select the path and convert to a selection from which I can then delete the surplus or create a mayer mask. I am quite unable to find out how to access these clipping paths in AP? Sorry to be so dumb, but can anyone help please? David Mac Quote
Staff MEB Posted September 24, 2016 Staff Posted September 24, 2016 Hi DavidMac, Currently it's not possible to access paths stored in JPG's (they don't support clipping paths natively). Photoshop stores additional info in the metadata sections of the file to be able to include them, but they are not part of the spec. This is already logged to be looked at. DavidMac Posted September 24, 2016 Author Posted September 24, 2016 That's interesting. These were not created in Photoshop by me. They come from a commercial library ready prepared in this manner. Another new thing learned! Thanks for prompt as ever reply. David Mac Quote
DavidMac Posted September 24, 2016 Author Posted September 24, 2016 Here's a follow on to my previous question. Many of these images come with a separate PNG mask file as well. I am wondering what is the best way to use this. Here's a simple two layer illustration. In AP I can Place the PNG above the image using snapping to get a proper registration (top layer in image). And with this selected, use the Flood Select Tool or Select > Tonal Range > Highlights to create a selection from it. Then select the image layer below and create a mask layer for it from the selection. Finally delete the original top layer. This works fine but seems a little convoluted. Anyone got suggestions for a better way? Quote
Staff MEB Posted September 24, 2016 Staff Posted September 24, 2016 Hi DavidMAc, You can select the png "mask" layer then go to menu Layer ▸ Rasterise to Mask to convert it to a Mask in Affinity apps. Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software
DavidMac Posted September 24, 2016 Author Posted September 24, 2016 I knew there had to be a better way. Don't you just hate when the answer was staring you in the face all the time? I try very hard not to waste time with questions which I ought to able to work out for myself. I always check the tutorials, and AP Help and the forums here first, but it is seems so easy to miss stuff which, when pointed out, makes you wonder how you didn't see it all along. I think there's just so much stuff to try it's a question of not seeing the wood for the trees. Thanks again MEB. :) Quote
Staff MEB Posted September 24, 2016 Staff Posted September 24, 2016 You're welcome David. There's indeed lots of details/features to care/know about in a program like this. It's hard to know/remember everything in the beginning ;) Don't worry about asking questions. We are happy to help. Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software
DavidMac Posted September 24, 2016 Author Posted September 24, 2016 I think it's a given that you will hear from from me again at some point. Part of the problem is that after years of ingrained habit from your competitor I have to un-learn so much as well. AP is a very different beast with a very different approach and often a different vocabulary as well. I am astonished at how good it is .... especially after such a relatively short time in the market. Quote
