Hi. I have a b&W image which I want to apply an eliptical mask to and feather the outside edges so that the image blends into the white page background at the edges

grateful for any suggestions or tips

I think this recent topic can also answer your question, using ellipse tool instead of rectangle:

I apologise for any approximations in my English. It is not my mother tongue.

Is this what you're wanting to do?

  • Create an Ellipse above your image
  • Fill the Ellipse with an Elliptical Gradient
    • For the Color stop on the edge, change the Opacity to Zero
  • Drag the Ellipse shape down, over the Thumbnail of your image layer.
  • I used a Paper Texture for the background. You can just create a White Rectangle or perhaps you already have the background.
  • Click on the Gradient for your Ellipse to tweak it.

Hope that helps.

FYI,

You can just create a Mask (click on the Icon at the bottom of the Layers Pallet), then apply an Elliptical Gradient to the Mask. However that method is destructive. Once you click off the Gradient tool, you can not go back and make changes to the gradient.
