mkpatrick6709 Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 Hi, I previously created designs and saved them to my assets menu. I am creating a new design and I inserted an asset to the new design. I then positioned the asset behind the new object. For some reason, the asset is showing through the object. The object is not transparent. The object has three layers to it and none are transparent. However, the asset I inserted which shows in the layers menu as being under the object is showing through instead of behind. I need it to show behind for the parts that are supposed to be behind. If you look at the image below, the part of the leaves and stem that is supposed to be on the design showing inside the bowl, but of course, for layers positioned behind the bowl, is showing through. I can't figure out why. I clicked on the button at the top right "insert at the top of layer" for the bowl after I already positioned the designs in the layers panel to see if that would help but it didn't. This screenshot shows how the leaves were created or rather what elements were used to create them. Please see the layers panel. Quote
DuncanL Posted December 3, 2024 Posted December 3, 2024 Your bowl curve has a Colour Dodge blend mode; so it's blending with the colours behind: The "bowl" on the left is Normal blend mode; the right is Colour Dodge Quote
mkpatrick6709 Posted December 3, 2024 Author Posted December 3, 2024 Thank you so much DuncanL for clarifying this for me, especially with the image. Hmmm...I like the look of the bowl with the color dodge. I didn't know it affects separate objects. Is there a way for me to keep the color dodge blend for the bowl and still have the other designs layer as I need them to? Quote
DuncanL Posted December 3, 2024 Posted December 3, 2024 Well; this is how I acheived it - someone else may come along with a simpler solution... I made a copy of the background, and used a copy of the bowl as a mask. I then added a copy of the bowl (with the colour dodge blend mode) on top of that, so it's just blending with the masked copy of the background that's exactly the same shape & size. I then grouped those elements so they all move together. Hopefully the demo document makes some sense... If you moved the bowl though; the copy of the background inside would not line up with the original; so you'd have to move it or recreate it in the new place. If you modified the bowl outline, you'd need to do the same to the mask version. Dodge Demo 2.afdesign Quote
mkpatrick6709 Posted December 7, 2024 Author Posted December 7, 2024 Hi DuncanL Thank you so much for your instructions and the demo. I'm not going to lie, it took me a while to figure out what you did without the save history and because I had other elements. The other elements like fill bitmaps kept causing me some problems but because of your instructions here and the demo, I figured it out. I wrote the instructions in an outline form in case someone else comes across this post. I want to thank you again. Your instructions and demo file greatly helped me. How to keep the color dodge blend mode effect and not have other elements show through 1. Make a copy of the color dodge layer 2. If the design has an added bitmap, jpg, or png fill(s) or sub-layer(s), delete all from the copy layer a.) This should leave your base layer with the originally applied color 3. Change blend mode to Normal 4. Apply this copy layer as a mask to a copy of the background 5. You should have 2 main layers in total a.) Put layers in the following order in the layers panel i.) Color dodge layer first ii.) Mask layer second b.) Group layers Quote
