Migration of dictionary from v1

Recommended Posts

2.5.5  on Windows 10

I’m only now migrating from v1 to v2, and that’s only because v1 refused to open a critical file despite much help from Serif and some friends.

Anyway, I had a customised dictionary (dictionary.propcol) and pdf export rules (file_export_options.dat), both in C:\Users\Sam\AppData\Roaming\Affinity\Publisher\1.0\user. I copied the latter to C:\Users\Sam\AppData\Roaming\Affinity\Publisher\2.0\user and that was recognised – no problem. However, I followed the instructions at https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/190021-how-do-i-add-additional-dictionaries-to-affinity-v2/#:~:text=You%20can%20add%20additional%20dictionaries,location%20by%20clicking%20Browse... to install my dictionary from v1, but it’s apparently not recognised.

I created C:\ProgramData\Affinity\Common\2.0\Dictionaries\en_GB, although according to https://admhelp.microfocus.com/.../882ca1eb-81b6-4a73... my locale-id is en-gb, but I copied the Affinity format. I then added en_GB.dic (the old dictionary.propcol), started up v2 and my words are still not known. I tried with en-GB (dir and file prefix) instead of en_GB, but it didn't help.

I then told Afpub to learn one of my words, closed it and searched for files updated today in ProgramData\Affinity but it only showed Dictionaries and en_GB.dic from when I installed the dictionary.

I’m running out of ideas, so would appreciate any advice. I could relearn the words, but that’s time-consuming and I wouldn’t necessarily know the correct procedure for the next migration (to Win 11 when I have the strength!).

Thanks.

The dictionary.propcol file must be named dictionary.propcol, and it is very different from a .dic file. And it does not live in the same directory as the dictionary files.

Yes, it's where your Learned words would live, but you shouldn't need to do anything with it assuming that you installed V2 onto the same computer where you had V1 installed and you kept V1 installed until after you had installed and run V2 at least once. At that point, all your .propcol files and content should have migrated over automatically without you doing anything, assuming you allowed migration when prompted during the first run of the V2 program.

If that did not happen, then you could try copying the V1 files from their location shown in the V1 FAQ to their corresponding locations shown in the V2 FAQ.

Thanks, Walt. I believe I have the right location now, as I renamed the distributed file and you can see it below alongside my version, which is identifiable by size and modified date. However, umptynine billion words (I exaggerate slightly) are shown as not known in the second image. Do ypu have any idea why this might be, please?

Yes, that looks like you have it in the correct location, at least assuming you installed using the MSIX version of the installer.

  1. Did you have it in that location when you started the application?
  2. If you put the cursor in one of the flagged words, what Spelling Language does the Character panel show? Is it the Language you were using when you Learned the word?

Hi Walt,

It shows English (United Kingdom), which is the only language I've used. Perhaps I should just remove v2 and reinstall it to see if that fixes the problem, as I'm losing a lot of time over this - either that or I'll just ignore the spelling in the pre-flight checks, but that risks my missing genuine errors.

I doubt that reinstalling would help, but you could try closing any V2 apps that you have running, then:

  1. Start Publisher while pressing the Ctrl key. Keep it pressed until you get the Clear User Data dialog. (You may need to watch for the Publisher icon on the Windows Taskbar and click it before you'll get the dialog.)
  2. In that dialog, one of your options should be to reset the Content Migration Prompt. Select that one. Maybe deselect all others, or at least the one about resetting the Studio.
  3. Perform the reset.
  4. Tell it you want to migrate your content from V1 again.

This assumes that:

  • You still have V1 installed.
  • You haven't made any new changes to V2 (Assets, Brushes, etc,) that you want to preserve.

Or you could run a Spellcheck, and re-Learn the valid words? But that really shouldn't be necessary.

And I haven't seen anyone else who has reported this issue, so I'm very puzzled that you had the problem, and copying the file didn't work.

Hi - I reinstalled Publisher 2, but it said I was on a trial licence, rather than using the Canva (non-profit) one, but after installing Photo and Designer, which both said I was using Canva, Publisher changed its mind and agree with them! Anyway, the dictionary problem has now been resolved, but I keep expecting to meet Alice and the Mad Hatter!

Thanks for your help.
