Because I am trying not to increase the page count, I tried to expand the margins from 20 mm to 10 mm (the gutter seems too wide) but my two-column A4 layout went a bit crazy. An extra section was created at the top and bottom of some pages, and the text has not expanded to fill the new margins as I had hoped. What am I doing wrong?

Changing the margins does not affect the text frames

You would (ideally) go to the master page and change the text frames there to snap to the new margins.

To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. If any of "my" posts are wrong or appear to be total b*ll*cks they are the ones generated by the AI. If correct they were probably mine. I apologise for any mistakes made by my AI - I'm sure it will improve with time.

Marvelous! All I had to do was drag on the circular handles on Master Page B. Now my carefully pinned illustrations are a bit chaotic, but that was to be expected. Thank you for a simple, but non-obvious solution (for a newbie)!
