Multi-line chapter heading to single line running header?

Recommended Posts

I have a chapter heading that reads "Good Times: Rebecca's Retirement Years" that automatically line splits between Retirement and Years. For visual balance, I would like to insert a line break between either Times and Rebecca's, or between Rebecca's and Retirement. When I insert the line break (shift enter), the running header (using a chapter header style in a running header field) also preserves the line break. I found a forum post (below) concerning multi-line headings in tables of content, and the TOC options include removing line breaks from chapter headings. However, looking at Running Header Settings, I don't see an equivalent option. Is there an option I may have overlooked? I would like to explore options before changing the chapter header. Hi, there isn't an option to do it but there is a workaround you could use, assuming all the text frames with the headings are the same width

  1. Edit the heading style and add a standard left-aligned tab stop set to the width of the frame. e.g, if the frame or column is 100 mm wide, set the tab stop to 100 mm
  2. Enter a space and a tab between the first and second lines of the heading and delete the line break. This will break the line because the tab forces to the text past the right edge of the frame and onto a new line. Now the running header will be on one line.
  3. Edit the running header text style and set its default tab spacing to 0. This will prevent the tabs from adding extra whitespace after the space character.

Cheers
