i am working in a single page document and i should have a facing page document, because i need the inner margins wider for spiral binding. if i change my document from single to facing pages some of the content shifts around. is there a way to keep it from shifting?

i did try to adjust my margins in the single pages document- (for instance all even pages with a wider left margin, and all odd pages with wider right margin) but it didn't change the margins.

its very time-consuming to adjust a 260 page document one by one- but that is all that has been working.

thanks!

If the text frames are inherited from the master page:

  1. Choose File > Document Setup - select Facing Pages and set the margins as desired
  2. Right-click the master page in the Pages panel and choose Spread Properties - select Facing Pages and set the margins as desired - it should inherit margin changes made in Document Setup
  3. Double-click the master page in the Pages panel - resize the left side text frame as desired and then duplicate it on the right side - link the left and right side frames
  4. Double-click page 1 in the Pages panel and then right-click it and choose Apply Master - select All Pages and ensure the correct master is selected if there is more than one

If the text frames are not inherited from the master page, you will have to scale them manually on each page. If all of the pages are essentially the same, you could delete all but the first page. The frame on the first page would then be overset (overflowing) and you could Shift + Click on the Text Flow Out control to Autoflow text and re-create all the pages, this time with the correct margins. But if you do this, ensure you have first followed the first two steps above so that the document and its master page are facing pages.

Good luck.

okay, so its actually not the text frame that is shifting. its just odd pieces of content that are not inherited from the master pages at all.

none of your suggestions will work, so i'm beginning to think that the only option is to do everything manually.

thanks

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying.

Everything should be inherited from the Master Page.

However, it is up to you to move the Text Frames on the Master Page. At that point, the Frames on the document pages should follow along.

Some users are confused because when they change the Margins nothing else adjusts, but that is correct processing. The Margins just provide guides for you to use when you are positioning content on the page (Master, or document). They don't directly control anything.
