Crashing When Scrolling Fonts

Recommended Posts

I've been running into an issue when using Affinity ever since I went on a font binge. I have about ~200 fonts whereas before maybe about 100. Now every time it crashes when scrolling through the font selector. Its always at random intervals not a specific font. I know there used to be an issue with the Microsoft NET framework as mentioned on the forums but I'm running the latest version of Designer (V1) and am on the latest version of Windows 11 and still have the issue. Photoshop does not crash under these circumstances. Any help would be appreciated, thank you. I've also tried a trial version of V2 and had the same issue.

What I've tried

Using a font manager to disable fonts: It crashes with any number of fonts except the ones built into windows natively.

Trying V2: V2 designer crashes under the same circumstances

Other programs: Illustrator and PS do not have any issues with fonts

Latest version of Windows 11

Latest Version of Designer V1.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Hi @skok,

Welcome to the Affinity Forums & sorry to hear you're having trouble!

As you've mentioned we've previously seen font issues in V1 of Affinity due to a specific change in .NET, provided in a Windows update. Our team resolved this issue in update 1.10.6, as outlined in the below FAQ -

I understand you have confirmed you are using the latest version of Designer V1, but just to verify can you please navigate to Help > About and let me know the exact version number that is shown in this dialog?

Can you also please confirm the font manager you are using?
If you install these fonts directly into Windows, rather than through the font manager, do the same crashes occur?

I'd like to see if the app is generating crash reports, as this may help to determine the cause of this issue. Please find the FAQ below on how to locate these reports -

Can you please attach the latest 3 reports here for me?

Can you also please navigate to Edit > Preferences > Performance and provide a screenshot of your settings here?

Many thanks in advance :)

Hi @Dan C,

FontBase is the font manager I'm using it. I installed it as a direct response to the font crashing even when downloaded directly into windows. So yes the crashing occurs in both circumstances.

Version Number: 1.10.6.1665

I've attached the three report files you requested. These were created today by opening Affinity, writing a line of text, selecting it, and then scrolling through the font search in which I then receive a no error crash.

Also may be important to note that I still get these crashes without hardware acceleration via the GPU. Changing the Renderer, Retina Rendering settings, and ticking the hardware acceleration box on/off has had no effect. I've also tinkered with the ram usage limit and that did not resolve any issues either. Other settings I did not touch.

Hope this helps!

Many thanks for verifying that for me, and the files provided!

I can see from your crash reports that 'RivaTuner' is hooked into the Affinity apps, as they both use the same Direct3D libraries. This is outlined in the below post -

This can cause the Affinity apps to crash, therefore we recommend either removing RivaTuner from your system if not needed, or adding the Affinity.exe, help.exe and crashreport.exe executables to be ignored, setting the 'Application detection level' to none.

Once complete, restart your PC and then try using the font search/picker within Affinity again. Does this stop the crashing behaviour please? :)

Hi @Dan C,  I removed Rivatuner entirely from my computer, restarted, and tried again but its still crashing. I also tried uninstalling Affinity after I removed Rivatuner, restarting, then installing affinity again. I'm still having the same problem. I've attached three of the crash reports after I did these things. Thanks!

Thank you for trying that, I'm sorry to hear this hasn't improved the experienced behaviour.

Can you please try the following:

Press the Windows Key + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog and then type CMD and press Enter. This will launch Command Prompt.

*Presuming you have the app installed in the default location, type in cd "C:\Program Files\Affinity\Designer\" and press Enter.
Now type Designer --disable-font-preview-cache and press Enter - the app will now launch.

Do you still have the same issue?

Yes. I followed your exact steps and can confirm affinity did launch when running Designer --disable-font-preview-cache. Scrolling fonts still causes no error crash. Here's 3 more crash reports.

I'm sorry to hear this hasn't stopped the apps from crashing!

Your latest reports show that the Nahimic service is still running, seemingly from 'A-Volute', which appears to be part of your sound drivers -

image.png

This is covered in the above ' Issues Caused By Third Party Windows Software' as the second app listed. Can you please try killing the Nahimic service and seeing if this resolves the error? If so, you should be able to resolve this by removing Nahimic or adding the Affinity apps to the relevant blacklist:

I hope this helps :D

Did not do anything. I uninstalled everything related to Nahimic, A-volute, and Asus from my PC and then restarted. Ensured Nahimic wasn't running in task manager and still have the exact same crashing issues. I really don't know what else to do at this point. I had this problem on windows 10 and so I upgraded to windows 11 to potentially solve the issue. I really do not know where to go or what to do. Maybe a corrupt font?

I'm very sorry to hear this hasn't helped and I apologise for the delayed response here - I'd like to request a copy of your Event Viewer log, as this may provide clarification as to the exact cause for this crash. To generate this, can you please:

1. Open Windows Run (Windows Key + R) and type the following - eventvwr
2. In the window that opens, select the Windows Logs drop-down list on the left and then Applications
3. With the Applications logs selected, navigate to the right side of the window and select Save All Events As... and save them as .evtx (the default option).
4. Attach this saved file to your reply here.

Many thanks once again!
