Linking and grouping

Recommended Posts

I seem to be having difficulty trying to "link" or combine a layer to another layer.  Everytime I try placing the layer on top of the layer that i want to link it to, it groups it instead.  I am using affinity photo 2 on the ipad.  I have to constantly take it out of the group and keep trying until it links itself....  I was hoping there was an option to "link the selected layer to the one below but I am not seeing it.  Am I missing something?

Layers are like groups, may be ignore layers for now and try Edit->Merge Curves.

Not sure if I have a different version of Affinity Photo 2 for the ipad, but I do not have merge curves...  it says merge down, merge selected, merge all.  :( I think your screenshot is of Affinity Designer, not Affinity photo.....

1. Ah ok, I assumed you were talking of vectors shapes and curves which was not clear from your post. Although Photo has some support for vectors Affinity Designer has more appropriate tools like merge curves for placing multiple vector shapes on the same layer. However you can use the geometry functions to manipulate vector shapes into a single layer eg using ADD shown here.

2. If you are working with pixel shapes not vectors then you can rasterise your any vector areas and then use merge down and merge selected options on the layers studio to place objects on the same pixel layer. Quick example of house pixel layers can be combined into a single layer.

Ahh... ok I get that.  My problem is I use Affinity Photo for digital scrapping also... so when I want to link a jpeg "paper" to a png "element", I have to keep trying it over and over to finally link.  Maybe I am not explaining it very well.  I will see if I can create a video of my dilemma, or just keep doing it over and over until it links LOL ...

Ah link is not the correct word, I think you may be trying to “clip” or “nest” one object inside another.

To do that you need to position the elements on screen on top of each other, then in the layers panel drag and lift one object up and to the right of the other object then let go.

@jdval Here is my next shot at guessing what you want, and it involves links, here I link to layers so that the are transformed in the same way, then i create another link of their opacity so that if one changes the other one does as well. Sorry if this is not right then you are going to need to screen record or add some examples of what you are trying to do.

In this demo I create links of various kinds between 2 layers, I hope it is clear.
