@Zafizack Thanks for your feedback. I've repeated your workflow and get mixed results in terms of memory usage. On some occasions the memory usage will increase when merging until complete, which is expected.  I also tried different image formats/file sizes, which will also have an effect on memory usage.

Have you tried opening the apps Settings > Performance and checking to see if Hardware Acceleration/Metal Compute is enabled/disabled and comparing results?

I have tried to disable and re-enable metal. this is a basic feature, which should not bloat memory. if I enable metal, the memory usage is much higher. I hope Affinity is reluctant to fix the basic features, before development. I am very happy with the presence of affinity. could be an Adobe Photoshop option. i am a teacher, i want my students to switch to affinity programs.
