I successfully altered the artboard background in order to clearly view the all-white logos within a variant document in my Affinity project. However, I am now faced with a dilemma when it comes to exporting the designs. While I can make the white background transparent by selecting the PNG format, the customized artboard background cannot be hidden for export. Therefore, I must revert back to setting all backgrounds as white to ensure that everything can be exported with transparency. Do you have any suggestions on how I can change the artboard background to function similarly to the default white background?

Create a new Artboard for the background and lay it out under the other Artboards. Set the color of it however you need. You will have a background to work on top of. When it comes time to export, just disable it in Export Persona or just don't export it at all in the Export dialog.

You're aware that you can enable and disable the checkerboard background in Designer via File → Document Setup → Color → Transparent Background?

MacBookAir 15": MacOS Ventura > Affinity v1, v2, v2 beta // MacBookPro 15" mid-2012: MacOS El Capitan > Affinity v1 / MacOS Catalina > Affinity v1, v2, v2 beta // iPad 8th: iPadOS 16 > Affinity v2

To answer your question simply, yes! That looks correct. When you export your enabled slices, whatever export preset(s) you had setup for those will still apply when exported separately, including transparency.

Are you aware you can store Artboards in the Assets panel? You could create a few Artboards with background colors you use most to save you the trouble of having to recolor them each time:

I do wish they would add the ability to allow us to set a background color that won't print/export for Artboards, but this is not a bad solution either. Sometimes I want to output several graphics onto a sheet of paper or in a single graphic, a sprite sheet for example, so having the additional Artboard already there in the background makes it easier as they will all print together as one in the background slice like the one you have disabled in your graphic.

Thank you for this. I didn't realize that EP (Export Persona) would export transparency when it was toggled off. But File > Export... doesn't give a transparent result unless using one of the Area: "Selection.." filters... That is unexpectedly inconsistent 🙃
