Font SF Pro Display: bad signs!...

Recommended Posts

Hello, in June 2023 I created an Affinity Designer file and used the “SF Pro Display” font in order to take on the look of the macOS system folder icons (and modify others for my own needs).

I just reopened this same file, but the signs are completely different (see the visual below)!...

Questions: do you have an explanation for this “bug”?...
Are there any precautions to take when using this set of fonts?...

Thanks for your help. ;-)

Probably, this is just a guess, it's due to possible expands/additions for that font so that characters maybe moved position wise in the fonts.

Meet the expanded San Francisco font family

Discover the latest additions to San Francisco – the system font for Apple platforms – and find out how they can provide more control and versatility when designing interfaces. In addition to weights and optical sizes, San Francisco now supports three new width styles: Condensed, Compressed, and Expanded. We'll also take you through the linguistic expansion of San Francisco and learn more about the feature-rich Arabic system font families: SF Arabic and SF Arabic Rounded.

You can take a look in ADe's Glyph browser, or some common Font preview tools, where certain characters are supposed to be index number wise.

Thank you v_kyr, I will watch all this with interest... ;-)

Did you upgrade your operating system during this time?

Older versions of SF Display Pro have a glyph called applestore in various sizes.

Newer versions of SF Display Pro do not have these glyphs.
What version do you have now?

Not sure how uni100906 got substituted.

Hello kenmcd,
...and thank you for your attention.

You were right, it was the version number of the font that was causing the problem.

From an “old” backup of my system dating from March 2023, I replaced (by drag and drop) the version of the SF Pro series dating from 2022 with the version from October 29, 2021 (Version 17.0d12e1)... and when opening my Affinity Designer (2.1.1) file, the glyphs are correct again.
I installed this old version in the Home “Fonts” folder: it worked. I also mounted these fonts with the RightFont application and it also worked perfectly.
Thanks again... ;-)

NB: I do not understand this situation where an official “made in Apple” font does not guarantee the continuity of the glyphs proposed?...

Okay, I found my file as I had closed it at the time.

But still, when I look under the Finder (see the attached screenshot) at its appearance in the form of an icon, I am doubtful: the icon is not that of the “Applications” folder of macOS!..

Really very strange and not very reassuring!...
