Print Dialog is gone after update , Designer 2.1.1 + Photo 2.1.1 / Mac

Recommended Posts

When i select "print" with any of my documents in Affinity Designer 2.1.1 or Photo 2.1.1, no dialog shows up.

I believe this worked before the latest minor update.

I have the sneaking suspicion the window may simply be off-screen somewhere (it may have coincided after i played with an ipad as external display). But I also can't see it in exposé or by right-clicking the icon in the launcher and selecting "show all windows". it's just not there.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Designer, tried "Settings→Reset user defaults" and unplugged all external displays. Nothing helps.

I have multiple printers installed and use them from other apps (e.g. Pages, Preview etc) quite normally.

What's going on? Is there a way to download the previous v2 version to see if the update broke it?

E: Exporting works just fine.

Welcome to the forums @MaWox

If you were using Windows I would suggest...

Immediately after choosing “Print…” from the File menu:

  • press Alt+space;
  • then press the “M” key;
  • then press any arrow key.

Then you should be able to move the mouse around and find the dialog.

Since you’re using a Mac that won’t work but someone else may be able to give you the Mac version of this workflow (if there is one).

(I’ve posted this here in case it helps any Windows users who find this thread.)

yep, that unfortunately doesn't translate to the mac version.

the app exposé feature on mac (F3 or three-finger-swipe up) is similar to what you suggested in that it realigns all windows in a gallery view in visible screenspace.
Like i mentioned, that's not showing the print dialog either. I also don't notice the cursor focus moving to another window, so maybe it's not that either.

I don’t know much about how Macs work these days but I’m not sure whether the Print dialog would be classed by the OS as a window or a ‘sub-window’.

For instance, on Windows I can have the Print Dialog open but, when I use Alt+Tab to switch between windows I don’t see the Print Dialog because it’s not an application window.

In lieu of a macOS expert (until one comes along) this page might be of some use: https://superuser.com/questions/55341/move-an-off-screen-window-back-on-screen-on-mac-os-x

@MaWox Have you tried the suggestion in the link @GarryP provided?

Can you confirm which version of macOS you're running?

Do other dialogs such as File > Export appear?

We've had issues with some settings within print presets in the past. Try opening TextEdit, then File > Print and either change the preset to another or delete them. Close TextEdit and reopen our app and try File > Print again.

@Lee D Solved it!  I removed all the installed system printers, then restarted designer, and the print dialog is back.

Finally can print tiled layouts again. Thank you for the tip regarding the printer presets, which led the way.

@GarryP you were also right in that the print dialog doesn't behave entirely like a regular app window - it's hidden in the app exposé view.

(and to answer the other questions:

latest mac os, 13.4.1 c.
Export worked all the time as expected.
Switching to another printer preset (or to "use previous") didn't change anything.

also, i'm very certain that the bug appeared in affinity photo after i upgraded to 2.1.1

)

If the problem comes back after i reinstall my printer drivers, i'll let you know in this thread.

Thanks again for the help everyone!
