How to create an object that forces others to transparency?

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I'd like to have an object that makes transparent (i. e. to the background) whatever it overlaps with. I have this issue many times and were always working around, but it would be really helpful, if I have a "forcing transparent" object like the ring for the o in the logo below:

Then I could move around the transparent and alter its position until it looks best. What is the best way to achieve this?

Thank You all very much in advance and best regards
-R.

If you don’t mind the result being rasterised then you can set the Blend Mode of the ring layer to be Erase.

If you need the result to be vectors then you may need to use Compounds.

Attached video shows both methods.

Note that I used the Alt keyboard modifier when pressing the Subtract button on the Toolbar to get the Compound, otherwise the subtraction would be ‘baked in’.

Other functionalities with Compounds are available, see the Help for more information.
