APu (all versions) don't carry over "Initial Words" settings in a paragraph style between Mac and Windows versions.

Recommended Posts

Hi again,

I have since ages this peculiar problem in complex paragraph text styles: I use a quite complex paragraph style with drop caps and initial words. I use them usually without modifications, however if I open Affinity Publisher document, saved in Mac version, in Windows, and vice versa, it seems to "forget" the Initial Words settings altogether. In the paragraph style settings, it shows as active, however in the Paragraph pane, it's off.

This happens quite often, and usually, if I reapply the style, it get's fixed, but of course, I would prefer all the style properties to simply stick right away, without having to reapply the style on every paragraph. In my latest books, I tend to have A LOT of them...

It happens in all Affinity Publisher versions that I have used, not in 100% cases, but say in half, maybe a bit more.

Please have a look at the appended file, all of the paragraphs should have Initial Words in small caps, however, depending on the version it opens in (Mac or Windows), they don't...

Thanks for the consideration, have a nice weekend!

On the spread it opens to (13-14), every paragraph has Initial Words set to off. The paragraph styles are defined correctly but there is a local attribute applied over the paragraph style. Re-applying the style will of course fix it.

If you're sure that you didn't turn off Initial Word, could you please share a screen recording showing the text style summary expanded before saving with Initial Word on, then save, close, re-open, and then show the text style summary again with Initial Word off?

Also, was this file created on Mac or Windows?

Thanks and good luck.

@MikeTO Thanks for the answer! I will try to record it, but it's quite a lot of work, so it won't be today.

I'm absolutely sure I didn't change the Initial Words. Re-applying the style does fix it, although sometimes I need to change the style to some other and then re-apply the original one. Also enabling the Initial Words fixes it, which is faster than applying two styles after each other.

It's strange. My work-flow is quite simple: I copy the entire thing, and then just copy the content (Cmd+Opt+Shift+V) over the original paragraph. With the correctly applied paragraph style. Sometimes it sticks, sometimes I save it and when I open it on another computer, which usually happens to be another operating system too, the Initial Words are disabled. Strange. However, if I open it on another system with Windows after saving in Windows, it usually sticks.

On a Mac, I found a strange way of fixing the absence of Initial word setting in some paragraphs…

  • I open your document
  • Dismiss the Fonts missing alert
  • Open the Find & replace panel:
    • Find > Format > Initial word: Inactive
    • Replace > Format > Initial word: Active
  • Click on Search
  • Click on Replace all. Everything disappears! (I don't know why…)
  • So, immediately Cmd-Z (Undo) until all is back.

— And, voilà!, Initial word settings are applied adequately overall.
