I have created an A4 document with the background set to transparent in the document color settings. The page background appears correct (as in transparent) while I'm building. When I export as a PNG, if I check "include bleed", the background becomes opaque (not transparent). I am sending the final file to a digital press. I tried setting to RGB but then the "include bleed" button is greyed out. I'm not sure if this is a 'bug' or I am missing something. See the attached side by side comparisons below:

correct transparent background if "include bleed is NOT checked on the left, and opaque background if "include bleed" is enabled on the right.
Any ideas?

@TMM Welcome to the forums.

I've logged an issue that relates to this, so that may resolve this as well. However, I'll log this separately, just in case.

As a possible workaround for the moment click the Matte colour field to open the dialog. Switch to Swatches > Colours and then click the preset No Fill/None swatch (part of 4 default presets None, Black,Grey,White)

Exactly the same happens on Photo. When using the installed presets ( PNG and PNG-8 ) everything works well, but if I adjust any setting like Pixel Format, Resample or ICC Profile, transparency is lost. And yes, it is solved using the workaround Lee D described.

Thank you Lee! That workaround was just the ticket. I was pulling my hair out, which is dangerous at my age.

One more question if I may. In your opinion, from a digital print/ quality standpoint, would I be better off exporting a transparent background A4 page with bleeds as a PNG or PDF?  Or does this depend on the capability of the digital printer I'm handing off to?

Here's a thumbnail of a sample page I would exporting.

Thanks again!

Tad

Thanks Don for helping to confirm the issue and the workaround does the trick.
