Ciao,
I created a footnote.
The footnote has a black colored top border that I can't get rid of. The one below in dark gray I created as a decoration. I guess it is a bug.

Isn't the black one just the Rule that is placed before Footnotes? You can control it using the Notes panel (Window  > Reference > Notes)

Thank you Walt,
however, I wonder if there is a missing link directly to the 'text' > 'notes' menu item to manage the appearance of the notes. How does one know it is in a whole other menu item?

Maybe the user-experience needs to be revised a bit :)

If one doesn't know, and hasn't learned it yet, one reads the Help. Specifically, in this case, the page for the Notes Panel (easily found by typing notes panel in the search bar).
