Making experiments with index to a songbook (for Christmas)  I cannot understand this:

After every entry I get a double space before the tab stop leader character. How can I avoid that? (See example).1461345365_Skrmbillede2023-02-26kl_16_12_36.png.1a4575c5c240f0ea27d15a4c65496dd3.png

Probably you have 2 spaces in the Separator field in the Index panel.

You are right. There was to spaces in the separator field. I did not put them there.

Now I have deleted the spaces in the field. How can I get the index to react. The menu: Text>Index>Update index is not active.

The panel: Text styles>Index entry>Update "Index entry" gives no reaction.

---

By the way: It seems that I can manage tab for Index in two ways:

In the index panel where I choose the tab in the separator field

In the text styles panel>Edit "Index entry">Tab stops.

In which way should I cooperate between these opportunities?

Is there a way to see the text ruler while typing the tap stop in the panel? It is rather confusing that the panel and the ruler not seem to cooperate.

When I changed the Separator field, with the cursor somewhere in the Index, the Index entries updated automatically. I did not need to do anything separate to get it to update.

I have only used the Index panel for that purpose.

You should be able to see the Text Ruler as long as you have it active for the Text Frame the Index is in. But I don't think it will update as you adjust the Index panel settings.

I don't understand. When you change the Separator fiield, you must place the cursor in the Separator field to click or write. It can not be somewhere in the index at the same time.

Sorry. Put the cursor in the index text. Then use the Index panel.

The cursor is, in a way, in both places.

I have to understand the procedure:

Just as an experiment I choose two songs in the index.

I have made no choises in the panel.

I select "Insert index" from the Text menu.

The titles show up with two spaces after + the page number. These spaces are in the Separator field in the panel by default!

If go to the Index panel, I can add tab. And you are right that it will show up in the index.

Now I can see, that I can make all these from the Index panel, and I should not try to edit the tab settings from the text style index. Only settings  concerning fonts and spaces.

By the way:

It seems like when I have created the Index, the style list has created to styles: "Index Entry" and Index Entry 1". Why?

In my opinion all these procedures might have been constructed less complicated.

If you want to change the appearance of the Index, you can edit those two Text Styles. If you were to edit the Index directly (not via those Text Styles, and not by using the Index panel), and then click the button to update/refresh the Index, your edits would be lost. If you make your changes via the Index panel or editing the Text Styles the Index generated, your changes will not be lost when updating/refreshing the Index.
