kdoner Posted February 19, 2023 Posted February 19, 2023 I can access the Sub Brushes panel, but if I try to edit anything (including adding a round brush) the program crashes. I really love the sub brush feature, so I hope this can be fixed. I am using version 2.0.4 on MacBook Air running Ventura 13.2.1 on an M1 chip, extended display Cintiq I have tried with hardware acceleration both on and off. I can enter the sub brush dialog, but if any slider is touched the program crashes. Interestingly if the same brush is reopened after restarting Affinity, the sub brush (round) remains in the brush attributes. Still, touching anything in the sub brush to edit, crashes the program. I have recreated this issue while using just the MacBook Air (no Cintiq), but SOMETIMES in this case, only the sub brush dialog crashes, not the entire program. My setup remains the same as when I first began using Affinity. Thanks for (an otherwise) great program! Quote
Staff NathanC Posted February 21, 2023 Staff Posted February 21, 2023 Hi @kdoner welcome to the forums, This isn't something i've been able to replicate when adding a round brush as a sub brush or when adding and editing existing sub brushes on a similar Mac setup on 13.1. This could be related to an issue with your local brushes .propcol file if you're unable to do anything without it resulting in a crash, however before we look at resetting brushes, could you confirm if this is an issue you are encountering on the Photo 2.1 beta? This installs along side the release version of Photo 2 rather than overwriting it and also has a separate local brushes .propcol file, I've provided a link to the sign up page below. https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/affinity-beta-program/ Many thanks 🙂 Quote
kdoner Posted February 21, 2023 Author Posted February 21, 2023 Oh darn! Maybe I posted in the wrong place? I'm using Photo 2 (to be specific, 2.0.4) Should I try resetting the brushes? (best to save out new ones I want to keep?) I appreciate your help, Kristin Quote
mardymarvin Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 I have also got this issue when trying to edit any sub brush it just crashes when you try and change things like the dynamics of a brush. This happens on both release version 2.0.4 and beta 2.1.0.1709 on the standard brushes with the application MacOs Ventura 13.2.1 Apple M1 Max 32GB ram Steps : choose basic brush select sub brush section and add a bitmap select the new subbrush and choose edit goto the dynamics section and go to change an item like jitter size this causes the crash. Now, not at all. Kristin Quote

I appreciate your help, No you're in the right place, I was just recommending trying the 2.1 beta version of the app to confirm if this is also causing the crash when you're attempting to use the sub brush menu/editor. 🙂 If you're ok with doing a brush reset in 2.0.4, Export out the brushes out to .afbrush files that you want to keep first, and then reset your brushes by following the below: Close Photo 2 Hold Down CTRL and launch the app whilst still holding CTRL A 'Clear User Data' Box will appear with three boxes ticked, tick the 'Reset Brushes' box (Note: If you have all 3 apps installed this will reset brushes across all of them, including vector brushes in Designer) Press 'Clear', the app will now launch, try doing a basic sub brush edit again. 10 hours ago, mardymarvin said: I have also got this issue when trying to edit any sub brush it just crashes when you try and change things like the dynamics of a brush. mardymarvin Posted February 23, 2023 Posted February 23, 2023 well that is just plain strange. I was going to create a brush for the crash so copied an exsisting brush then went to do the changes and it did not crash. Now I cant get it to crash at all. It seems that just from copying a brush I guess it must have done something to fix it ? sorry just confused as it consitantly crashed before Quote
kdoner Posted February 23, 2023 Author Posted February 23, 2023 Ok, I'm doing more testing, following mardymarvin's idea of using an existing brush. Now things have gotten very wonky. I'm considering resetting as NathanC suggested... just don't have the time to sort brushes right now. In the meantime, here are several brushes with varying degrees of success... Brush 1 was made from an Acrylic brush, successfully adding an element in sub brush. Returning to edit, it can NOT be edited in sub brushes. Brush 2 was made from one of my own brushes, successfully adding an element in sub brush. This brush CAN be edited in sub brushes. Brush 3 a Round Brush with a Round sub brush added. This brush Can be edited in sub brushes. Brush 4 started as a Round Brush with my added bitmap element in sub brushes. Affinity allowed me to add the element, modify it, return to the round brush to edit... when returning to the sub brush (before closing dialog), program crashes. Upon reopening the brush is missing added elements or edits. Brush 5 is Brush 4 duplicated (not a new round brush) with a bitmap element added. This time I exited the dialog after adding and modifying the sub brush. No crash. Brush 6 is Brush 5 duplicated with added texture to the primary brush. No crash. Brush 7 is Brush 1 duplicated and successfully edited in sub brushes (crashed before) Hoping all this provides a little insight from the engineering perspective.
