How convert shadow on photo into solid colors (100% opacity) so it can be used for DTG printing ?

Recommended Posts

Im new to Affinity and when im doing graphics for t-shirts im using blur which cause that some of the parts are not 100 opacity, which is problem with DTG printing. In photoshop is blending mode which turn those parts to solid colors. Is there way, how to do this effect and solve the problem with shadows in Affinity ?

Thank you in advance:)

Could you provide

  • a file exported from PS (no screenshot, the actual file)
  • the same design in Affinity (afphoto / afdesign, before exporting)?

I don’t have access to PS, but if i get an example template we will find a way.

  • Do you want to export as raster / bitmap?
  • Remove all transparencies, or only in area with shadow?
  • use white as backfill color for partial transparent areas?

Thanks for providing the video via private message.

unfortunately i don’t get it fully why the filter solves the transparency issue. I could not really spot the visual difference it makes. Will try again on 4K display later.

never the less, i see the color black is used as backfill.

in affinity, we have a filter called diffuse which produces a similar effect like ps blend mode dissolve - but it works on one layer and swaps pixel randomly within given radius.

to solve he transparency issue,

  1. add a levels adjustment
  2. choose alpha channel
  3. set white level to 0.

this will leave fully transparent areas untouched, and make all partial transparent areas fully opaque.

i hope this helps a bit

...can I get a somehow similar effect like is on the picture (from shadow) ?

Hard to say.
The problem with effects is that most of the time we can only try to guess.
Looking at your image it looks like perlin noise or some variation of it.

Fill a layer with perlin noise.

Next create a mask so that you have hard edges:
a) Add a threshold adjustment
b) Load one of the RGB channels as a selection
c) Add a mask to your perlin noise layer
d) Disable the threshold adjustment

Finally give your perlin noise layer some color. I used a gradient map and HSL adjustment.
