Using Publisher-v1 it does not export a PDF with editable text.

Recommended Posts

Hi

Using Publisher-v1 it does not export a PDF with editable text.
When selecting the PDF format when exporting, the windows says it will not rasterise the pages. No matter which format of PDF I choose, the exported PDF is in image format, i.e. pages are rasterised, and the text is no longer editable in Publisher or Acrobat.

In another chat about sharing files between v1 and v2, exporting a PDF is offered as a solution, as v1 and v2 of Publisher's .afpub files are no longer compatible. So, exporting to PDF is not a solution either.

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums.

Both V1 and V2 can certainly export PDF files with editable text, so it is most likely something you've done in your file.

Can you provide us with the .afpub file you exported from?

Also, did you create all the data in this file, or did you generate it from some other file?

It was originally created in another format, InDesign, but I only have the PDFs. Attached is the afpub I edited.

Just to clarify: you did not have the original InDesign document, only a PDF created by InDesign?

The actual live text is OCR which is usually without a fill.
PDF export ignores "blank" objects without fill and stroke attributes. (InDesign PDF export does the same, for that matter, so that's obviously "by design".)

To keep the OCR text intact on PDF export, you need to assign a defined fill with 0% opacity to all text objects – actual color doesn't matter – and export as PDF 1.7. That will keep the text invisible but selectable and searchable without rasterizing it.

To assign a defined fill to all text in your OCR document globally, use Find & Replace > Regular Expression:

  1. Use the dot . as regex search pattern as it will find every single character in the whole document.
  2. Replace with no text, but select Format > Character > Color > Text Fill > any random color with Opacity: 0%

Thanks for that info, @loukash. It explains a problem I've experienced but not yet investigated, and gives a reasonable solution for me to try :)
